DJI, a company we know for its amazing drones and cameras, has lent its tech expertise to help launch a new electric mountain bike powered by a new DJI drive system.

The Amflow PL is a new e-bike with the DJI Avinox with 850W of peak power yet still weighing in at an ultralight 19.2kg.

It is a full power eMTB with an ultralight carbon fibre frame that tips the scales at just 2.27kg.

And at the heart of the Amflow PL is the DJI Avinox drive system which combines multiple technologies in both software and hardware design.

The unit has a compound planetary gear set and provides impressive power-to-size ratio with 105Nm torque and a peak power output of 850W.

And all that comes from the DJI drive unit that weighs just 2.52kg.

Inside the unit are high strength polymer gears which can suppress noise during high speed gearbox operation.

There are also several precision sensors on board which, when combined with DJI’s advanced algorithms, offer strong and smooth assistance across a wide range of scenarios and conditions.

The DJI Avinox drive system also includes a special Auto Mode which can adapt the assistance based on the conditions and the riding position.

Once this is activated it allows users to take on a variety of terrain types and gradients without the need to switch modes.

But on challenging trials, Boost Mode can be activated to give the rider 120Nm of torque and 1000W high-power assistance to tackle those steep inclines with ease.

Other modes include Walk Mode with intelligent walk assistance for easy incline travel, Auto Hold to stop rollback on steep inclines and Hill Start Assist to give riders that additional burst of torque to get started on inclines.

The Avinox system’s battery has an ultra-high energy density and weighs 2.87kg.

The included 508W GaN fast charger can charge the battery from 0 to 75 per cent in just 90 minutes.

The Amflow PL’s frame design includes cutting edge geometry for balanced performance and with the agility to help riders take on rugged trails and more technical rides.

The frame is compatible with both 27.5-inch and 29-inch rear wheels and could handle larger and smaller wheels with a simple adjustment of the flip chip so as not to alter the frame’s geometric centre of gravity.

On the suspension side, the rear shocks have a sensitive initial stroke response to filter out any minor vibration and can also prevent bottom outs during continuous high speed impacts or steep descents.

Also onboard is a 2-inch full colour OLED touch screen control display which is integrated into the frame to offer the rider information including real time riding data, estimated range and easy access to the settings.

The bike can also connect to the Avinox app to customise riding modes, set up a password protected anti-theft mode and even access the bike’s real time location.

The Amflow PL electric mountain bike will be available by Q4 2024.

Even though Australians are facing solid cost of living pressures our interest in smart home technology is set to propel the industry to crack the $2.5bn mark this year and exceed $5bn by 2027.

The Telsyte Australian Smart Home Market Study 2023 has found the smart home market in Australia is being driven by the demand for energy efficiency, convenience and security.

Nearly half (48 per cent) of adopters have five or more types of smart home devices but feel the current offerings are not quite smart enough, according to the Telsyte study.

The research found cost of living pressures overshadowed the benefits of creating a smart home with more than half (59 per cent) of those interviewed for the study saying they are under increasing financial pressure.

But despite cost of living pressures, the study showed the move to smarter homes will not slow down.

Today nearly one third of households have five or more smart devices.

Creating a connected living environment has sparked interest with smart appliance vendors who are enabling their air conditioners, washing machines and fridges to fit in with a smart home lifestyle.

Already one in five households (18 per cent) have a robot vacuum.

Rising energy prices is also putting pressure on Australian household budgets with 74 per cent saying their energy bill increased in 2023.

Apart from saving money and energy, the study showed that 28 per cent of households also want to be more environmentally friendly with smart energy solutions and more considering going solar and adding storage batteries.

The trend is also reaching the garage with high fuel prices steering more people to EVs,

Tesla is still the runaway leader in sales but as more EV models come to market at more affordable prices expectations will grow and will become more popular with potential buyers.

Telsyte has found there is a move from the connected home to AI-enabled smart living thanks to the hype around generative AI and technology like ChatGPT.

“Australians will increase the look for him AI powered smart living solutions that offer convenience, personalization and enhanced functionality,” says Telsyte managing director Foad Fadaghi.

AI voice assistants are cutting through in the market and 60 per cent of consumers think AI can effectively manage their smart home better than they can.

The report also found 43 per cent of people want a smart home that has advanced AI capabilities that enable natural language communication to automate complex tasks.

Telsyte’s forecast is for the smart home market to be worth more than $5 billion by 2027 with the introduction of more expensive smart home products including smart batteries and smart appliances.

In fact, smart appliances could account for a third of all appliance revenue by 2027.

Smart speaker adoption has plateaued, but AI-powered experiences are set to be the next big thing.

Google is reportedly adding generative AI capability to Google Nest smart speakers which are already the leading smart speakers in more than half of Australian households.

Another factor increasing our smart home adoption is smart security surveillance and smart home care with the view to put smart devices to work to help those with disabilities and in aged care and not just for entertainment.

They Telsyte report found that 1.6 million (16 per cent) households have seniors or members with a disability who need special assistance or care.

The report found this 31 per cent of houses have security surveillance systems while self-monitored online security systems make up about half of the installed base.

Smart security video cameras with increased AI features continue to be popular in 2023 with the market now worth more than $330 million in Australia.

While electric vehicle sales are slowly increasing but a shortage of chargers in some areas has become a barrier to entry for some drivers. But what about if you can use private chargers owned by current EV drivers?

That’s the model behind the platform being built by PowerPod that will become another section of the share economy.

We have Airbnb to rent out your house, Uber to get someone to give you a lift in their car. There’s even a service where you can hire out your backyard pool.

Soon there will be an app where you’ll be able to offer access to the EV charger in your driveway when you’re not using it.

And EV drivers will be able to use that same app to locate nearby available chargers and pay for the energy they use to charge their electric car.

PowerPod is building decentralized physical infrastructure network of community owned EV chargers.

This integration will be able record and store charging session data, handle transcations and provide rewards in the form of tokens.

One third of possible EV buyers cite the lack of infrastructure as they reason they haven’t pulled the trigger on their purchase.

The Polestar 4 electric car – which combines the look of a coupe and the space of an SUV – has gone on sale in Australia with the first orders expected to hit the road by August.

Starting at $81,500, the Polestar 4 is the fastest production the car the company has produced and can go 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds.

Both long range models have a 100kWh battery with the long range dual motor offering a range of 580km while the long range single motor takes the range up to 610km.

“The introduction of Polestar 4 into all our markets through the course of 2024 is key to our success, adding this third model to our line-up. Polestar 4 tackles the premium performance class in the D-SUV segment.

Polestar 4’s innovative interpretation of an SUV coupé offers great interior space and a stunning appearance,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.

The Polestar 4 – which in terms of size price sits between Polestar 2 and 3 – has a striking design with dual blade front headlights, retractable door handles and an aerodynamic shape.

Where did the rear window go?

Inside is a 15.4-inch landscape screen where you can control the infotainment system powered by the Android Automotive OS which includes Google Maps, Google Assistant, Android Auto and wireless CarPlay.

There is a 10.2-inch driver cluster that is mounted ahead of the steering column which displays speed, battery and range information.

Also onboard is a Harman Kardon audio system with 12 speakers and a 1400-Watt channel-hybrid amplifier.

The EV also has a full-length glass roof that stretches back past the rear passengers’ heads.

The rear passengers also have their own media and climate control screen.

But one thing missing from the Polestar 4 is the rear window.

But it still has a rear-view mirror which is actually a high-definition screen that shows the driver a live real-time feed from a roof mounted camera which has a wide field of view that even lets you check your blind spots.

“With Polestar Precept we previewed a stunning new occupant experience by removing the rear window and pushing the rear header, which plays an integral safety role, further back,” says Maximilian Missoni, Head of Design at Polestar.

“This means that now, rear occupants can have a unique experience in our SUV coupé.”

Samsung has shared its plans and insights for AI at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and unveiled AI-enabled visual display products, digital appliances and the upgraded Ballie rolling AI robot.

But Samsung was very quick to point out – they’re not coming late to the party with AI – they’ve already invested more than a decade of time and energy into the technology.

Samsung says AI will enable connected technologies to improve people’s daily lives but will stay in the background.

“With the emergence of artificial intelligence, smarter, better experiences will redefine how we live,” Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Samsung’s Device eXperience (DX) Division said.

“Samsung’s broad portfolio of powerful devices, along with the pursuit of open collaboration, will help bring AI and hyper-connectivity to all.”

Samsung re-introduced Ballie a rolling robot that was first introduced in 2020.

Today Ballie has evolved into an AI companion that can interact with other smart devices and offer customised tasks and services.

Ballie is also equipped with a short throw and long throw projector to display content as well.

Samsung’s new 2024 Neo QLED TVs are powered by a new NQ8 AI Gen 3 processor to make upscaling to 8K quality even better and faster.

But AI isn’t just restricted to TVs. Samsung is deploying AI into its appliances as well starting with the Bespoke 4-Foor Flex refrigerator with AI Family Hub.

This refrigerator has a 32-inch screen but also includes the new AI Vision Inside which uses internal cameras to recognise up to 33 different food items as you’re putting them in or taking them out of the fridge.

And with this information, the refrigerator can suggest recipes based on the ingredients inside.

The Samsung Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is an all in one washer and dryer featuring the AI Hub – a 7-inch display that is the control centre for managing your laundry.

It can also remember users habits via machine learning and suggest cycles that will save you time, water and energy.

Samsung’s new bespoke Jet Bot Combo also employs AI to offer an effective cleaning experience thanks to AI object recognition which can distinguish even more objects as well as detecting stains and spaces.

This also means the robot vacuum can recognise the type of floor it encounters and the length of carpet and adjust its settings to match.

SmartThings is at the centre of Samsung’s connected home vision.

Samsung has partnered with Tesla

Spatial AI will now help connected devices recognise the living space and routines of the user to come up with a more personalised home management experience.

SmartThings uses LIDAR on connected devices like robot vacuum cleaners and create digital floor plans to easily check the status and location of all your devices.

In March, SmartThings will roll out the upgraded 3D map view for a more detailed experience on Samsung smartphones and TV’s.

And if you want to add more family members and friends to your SmartThings ecosystem, they simply have to scan a QR code so that they can have their own routines recognised.

On the sustainability side, Samsung is also ramping up its efforts and partnering with other companies to help customers live more responsibly.

A new feature called SmartThings AI energy mode utilises AI to help track your energy usage and create ways to help you save and optimise your power.

Part of the SmartThings energy strategy is partnering with Tesla to connect products like Powerwall home batteries and electric vehicles along with solar inverters and wall connector EV charging solutions.

Samsung has also partnered with Hyundai

This collaboration will be able to help customers in numerous ways and help drive more responsible energy usage and extend the usage time of any backup energy stored in the Tesla powerwalls.

Samsung is also bringing the home and the car closer together with a few new home-to-car capabilities.

Samsung has also partnered with Hyundai Motor group with both parties having access to home to car and car to home services thanks to the smart things connectivity.

“Using Hyundai Motor Group’s software-defined vehicle, SmartThings will now work with Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles through the app,” Haeyoung Kwon, Head of Infotainment Development Center and SDV Execution Sub-Division at Hyundai Motor Group

 said.

“All of us at Hyundai Motor Group appreciate our partnership with Samsung, and we’re excited about the new features we’re bringing to your vehicles through smarter connectivity.”

Using SmartThings, users will be able to use their voice to remotely perform functions in their car including heating it up in advance or opening and closing windows.

The SmartThings connectivity can also work the other way with users able to manage and control home functions from their car.

Samsung has deepened its longstanding partnership with Harman to transform the way users experience driving.

“Samsung’s leadership in consumer technology — together with HARMAN’s automotive expertise — has opened the door to game-changing experiences like HARMAN Ready Care, Ready Vision and Ready Display,” Michelle Gattuso, Vice President of Product Management at HARMAN said.

“But now, the work we do with Samsung is getting even more integrated. Samsung and HARMAN are working in lockstep to bring even more impactful experiences to the entire in-cabin ecosystem.”

BYD has revealed its latest electric vehicle – the BYD Seal – a mid-size sedan that offers affordable luxury and priced from below $50,000 plus on road costs.

The BYD Seal will sit in the same class as the Tesla Model 3 – but the BYD starting price will be almost $12,000 cheaper.

In fact, the BYD website and order page for its BYD Seal looks a lot like the Tesla website and order page.

The new BYD Seal has what BYD says is the world’s safest battery which integrates the cell to the body to make the Seal lighter and more efficient.

It has a 2,920mm wheelbase and can comfortably sit five adults.

BYD says the Seal will be available to Australian drivers as early as December.

The BYD Seal is available in three models – Dynamic, Premium and Performance.

The exterior styling is sleek design and aggressive stance and includes floating LED headlights and ripple lamps.

MG Motor Australia has unveiled its new MG4 EV XPOWER model which features dual motor all-wheel drive and that can zip from 0 to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds.

The new MG4 XPOWER is priced at $59,990 plus on road costs.

The XPOWER is the company’s highest performing all-wheel drive electric hatchback – in fact it will be its most powerful production car ever.

The company’s approach with the MG4 XPOWER is all about delivering to Australian drivers impressive power and dynamics at an extremely competitive price.

With 320kW of power and up to 600Nm torque, the MG4 XPOWER is up there with some of the highest performing EVs on the market and offers plenty of bang for your buck.

The MG4 XPOWER can go zero to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds so you’re definitely ticking the box when it comes to performance.

The car also has several understated exterior design revisions which also helps it stand out from the crowd.

On the outside you’ll see orange XPOWER brake callipers, two tone black roof with 18-inch alloy wheels and polished trim accents and an all-new colour option – Hunter Green.

“The MG4 XPOWER has supercar performance packed with features including launch control and a track mode inspired lap timer showing that a compact EV can be affordable, practical and spirited to drive,” says MG Motor Australia and New Zealand CEO Peter Ciao.

“We expect it will appeal to customers looking for a true performance car with plenty of technology and space to match.

“The MG4 XPOWER EV also retains the generous safety equipment levels, as well as practical hatchback features, of the award-winning MG4 range.

“The MG4 XPOWER is available to register your interest from this week and promises to be one of the most exciting new electric cars of 2023, marking a new milestone in MG Australia’s highly anticipated return to the performance car market.”

The MG4 XPOWER is based on the Modular Scalable Platform and has a dual motor configuration to deliver to all four wheels via 150kW at the front and rear 170kW electric motors for a total of 320kW.

On the safety side, there are new upgrades including a new Dynamic Cornering Control System available for the first time in an MG vehicle plus an Intelligent Motor Control to control torque vectoring between all four wheels to gain maximum traction in all driving conditions.

The 64kWh battery is capable of charging at up to 140kW so users can go from 10 per cent to 80 per cent using 150kW DC rapid charger in just 26 minutes.

The most obvious change is the look of the vehicle which has a sleek and more aerodynamic look to help reduce drag and noise and increase range.

It has new wing-shaped headlights with integrated fog lamps to improve safety while driving at night.

The new Tesla Model 3 sports a new taillight which is designed in one piece and integrated into the boot.

And there are also two new paint options in Australia and New Zealand – Ultra Red and Stealth Grey.

There are numerous changes in the interior including a redesigned centre console to offer more space for the driver and passengers.

EVs are already quiet but the Model 3 will offer an even quieter ride courtesy of the 360-degree acoustic glass technology.

Noise will also be reduced with increased suspension bushings, improved seals and the addition of sound dampening materials.

The new Model 3 interior now incorporates ambient lighting which is customizable from over 200 different colour combinations to offer yet another level of personalization.

Rear passengers will have access to an 8-inch touch screen so they can control air conditioning and entertainment from their rear seats.

Up front the 15-inch touch screen has also been improved with increased brightness and faster responsiveness along with a customizable user interface that will be improved constantly thanks to Tesla’s regular over the air updates.

The new Model 3 has taken a leaf out of the Model S Plaid’s (not available in Australia) book by eliminating stalks and the drive selector and replacing them with on-wheel and touchscreen controls.

Smart shift, first seen in the Model S plaid, can automatically select the correct driving direction for you instead of manually choosing it yourself.

On the safety side, the new Tesla Model 3 has energy absorbing side sills, a fortified battery pack mounted low in the vehicle to eliminate rollover risks as well as a super strong metal body structure that can withstand tremendous weight far beyond the actual weight of the car.

Drivers will enjoy new comfort and driving quality thanks to next-generation vehicle stability, improved power distribution and Tesla’s impressive traction control.

There are also upgraded wheel configurations in 18 inch and 19 inch options.

The new Tesla Model 3 starts at $61,900 plus on road costs. It offers up to 513km range.

The new Model 3 Long Range model starts at $71,990 plus on-road costs and offers up to 629km of range.

Nearly half of Tesla’s Superchargers across Australia will now be available to charge non-Tesla electric vehicles which will go a long way in easing range anxiety and encouraging drivers to make the switch to EVs.

Now 30 of Tesla’s 63 Supercharger sites around the country can now be used by all EVs.

Until today, Tesla’s Superchargers would work exclusively only with Tesla vehicles.

Tesla says it was always the company’s mission to open its wide network of superchargers to make it more attractive to driver to make the transition to electric vehicles.

“I think we do want to emphasize that it is our goal to support the advent of sustainable energy, it is not to create a walled garden and use that to bludgeon our competitors, which is sometimes used by some companies.” Tesla boss Elon Musk said in an earnings call in July 2021.

Tesla owners will keep their existing privileges while the company will still manage congestion and enforce idle charges per minute if a vehicle remains at the Supercharger five minutes after their charging session is completed.

Tesla’s chargers are known for their consistency and have delivered a global uptime of 99.95 per cent in 2022.

The Superchargers can add up to 275 kilometres of range in just 15 minutes and are located along major freeways and near amenities so you can grab a coffee or a meal while your EV is charging.

MG has launched one of Australia’s most affordable EVs – the MG4 – and Tech Guide got a chance to get behind the wheel ahead of its official launch earlier this week.

The vehicle was officially unveiled at the South Sydney Rabbitohs High Performance Centre at Heffron Park – MG is, after all, South Sydney’s major sponsor.

The MG4 is the first MG model built with its new Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) which means it was designed as an EV from the ground up.

The previous MG ZS EV was an electrified version of the petrol model but the MG4 was an EV from the moment it was conceived.

The hatchback has a sleek eye-catching design. MG said the goal was to make the car look fast even when it was standing still.

It’s also available in a range of standout colours including Brixton Blue and Volcano Orange.

The MG4 Excite 51 that we drove starts at $38,900 plus on-road costs and has a range of 350km and can move from 0-100km/h in 7.7 seconds.

MG Motor is also offering the MG4 64kWh Excite ($44,990 plus on road costs, 450km range), MG4 64kWh Essence ($47,990 plus on road costs, 435km range) and the MG4 77kWh Essence Long Range ($55,990 plus on road costs, 530km range).

One of the most attractive features of the of the MG4 is the price which is now within reach of most drivers shopping for a new car.

EV adoption has been slow in Australia because they were priced like luxury cars but with models like the MG4 coming to market it will certainly move the needle and be seriously considered by customers who were previously on the fence.

Range anxiety is also a factor but the MG4 models offers impressive range.

Some of the things that drive up the price of EVs is the size of the battery which also translates to range, the performance (speed from 0-100km/h) and the sheer size of the car.

What was achieved with the MG4 is bringing together quality, performance and value to make it a real competitor and make it on the list for customers considering the switch to an EV.

We drove the car for just under a week and found it to be an excellent drive.

The car is rear wheel drive and has a smooth ride and power when you need it.

It was a lot zippier than when we expected. It has 125kW of power and 250Nm torque.

The onboard battery, which is shorter than a can of coke, sits across the case of the car and provides a 50/50 weight distribution over both axles which is responsible for the stable ride.

On a road trip you can charge the battery to 80 per cent capacity in under 40 minutes.

But it is recommended if you are considering an EV purchase is to install a charger at home that can top up the battery overnight.

Considering Australians on average drive 35km a day the range of the MG4 Excite 51 will certainly coverage most people’s daily driving needs.

On the safety side the MG Pilot is included as standard on all MG4 EV models and offers a range of safety equipment and features including Active Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Bicycle Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Jam Assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning System, Driver Attention Alert, Intelligent High Beam Assist.

It has LED headlights and taillights and a reversing camera along with 17-inch alloy wheels with an Aero Cover.

It also offers keyless entry and Auto Start/Stop.

The MG4 has a solid feel to it as well. The doors close with a reassuring thunk which reflects the outstanding build quality.

The interior is as sleek and stylish as the outside with plenty of room for the driver and passengers.

I’m 184cm tall and I could fit in the driver’s seat with ease and the back seat was also quite roomy.

Plenty of space in the boot too – 363L with the back seats up, 1177L with the back seats down.

I could easily fit my golf clubs and buggy when the back seats down.

The interior features a 7-inch digital cluster in front of the driver as well as a 10.5-inch main touchscreen.

The system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto when you connect your device with a USB cable.

The MG4 doesn’t actually have its own GPS navigation so you need to rely on either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay to get around.

And being designed as an EV, there is no lump in the middle of the car which usually accommodates the drivetrain of a petrol car.

With the added space there is more room to store things alongside the conveniently located cup holders.

There are also USB-A and USB-C charging ports as well.

The MG4 Excite 51 might be priced at the lower end of the EV scale but it most certainly punches above it weight.

It would be an ideal first EV for anyone thinking of making the switch.
