Although a Mac tends to have quite a bit of space, it’s very easy to fill it up. You use it to store your documents, projects and all kinds of stuff. Low and behold, at some point you are very low on space and don’t really know what to do. You could buy extra storage space, or you can figure out how to free up some space on your device.

Try to use the Mac’s built-in tools

Yes, the Mac platform has some great tools for helping you free up some space. Obviously you will need to do a bit more than that. But realistically, storing stuff in the iCloud can be a good way to save space. You can also optimize storage from your device, and that will also help with the process. Also, set the option to empty your Trash Bin automatically. That can be a great option to consider if you want to save space on your Mac.

Delete stuff from your Downloads folder

We all download lots of items online, and at some point the Downloads folder can be quite big. That’s why it’s a very good idea to empty the folder as often as you can. If you are someone that uses the device often, it’s a good idea to empty it once or two times a month, maybe more often. It helps you avoid situations where you end up not having enough space.

Use a cleanup tool

The role of a Mac cleanup tool is to make sure that you eliminate unwanted files from your device automatically. What’s great about this is the fact that you will have access to a vast array of tools which track unnecessary files, such as temporary files for example. Those get deleted automatically, which helps ensure your device runs smoothly and without any problems. It’s a solid approach, and it will give you a much better outcome every single time.

Start using external storage solutions

External storage is a very good option if you want to save space on your device. The best thing about it is that you can easily store stuff on a portable SSD or hard drive, even on a flash drive. In the end, that’s great because it allows you to better optimize how you work and how you manage your space. The benefit here is that external storage is plug and play, it’s very effective, and it will help make the process a lot better than expected.

Delete apps you’re not using

If you have lots of apps that you’re not using, delete them. You can go to the Applications folder to delete them, and you can also enter the Library folder to remove any of the remaining files from them. That’s a great option to think about, because it helps save time, and it will give a much better result in the end. At the same time, be mindful about what you are installing on the device, and you’ll see that you will be saving a whole lot of space.

Focus on removing large files

A good idea here is to try and remove those older files if you can. The reason why you want to target large files is because you will be getting more space back. And there’s also less stuff to delete as well. With that being said, you do want to create a backup for those large files, if they are very important. Making sure that you will remove large files is extremely important, and it will help save a significant amount of effort and time. At the end of the day, the quality is always important, so ensure that you always focus on results.

Delete old backups

You will notice that old iOS backups made by iTunes or third party tools can be quite large too. And when you do a few dozen of those, they will eat up a lot of space. Keep the latest backup or a few of them, and then delete the rest. It will be incredibly helpful!

These tips and ideas are great if you want to free up space on your Mac. It might seem difficult to free up space at first, but realistically, you need to delete stuff and perform a regular cleanup to remove unnecessary files. That, combined with a more focused approach when it comes to installing and deleting stuff will help you save a lot of effort!

Apple has unveiled its new AirPods 4 with a new design and active noise cancellation and announced an update for AirPods Pro 2 that can turn them into hearing aids.

Apple has also updated the AirPods Max headphones with new colours and USB-C charging.

The AirPods 4 will be available in Australia on September 20 and will be priced from $219.

AIRPODS 4

The AirPods 4 have a new look and maintains its open ear design and will be available in two models – with or without active noise cancellation.

The new design comes after Apple’s extensive analysis and mapping of thousands of ear shapes and the collection of more than 50 million individual data points.

The new AirPods 4 include a new acoustic architecture, low distortion driver and high dynamic range amplifier and now include personalised spatial audio with dynamic head tracking.

Under the hood is the H2 chip which allows AirPods 4 to offer intelligent audio experiences like voice isolation and clear call quality even in noisy surroundings.

For the first time, the AirPods 4 now have the option of active noise cancellation which can help reduce external sounds on flights and public transport.

Also on board is transparency mode so users can also be aware of their surroundings.

It also has adaptive audio which is a combination of transparency mode and ANC and determined by the sounds around you.

Another new feature is conversation awareness which automatically lowers the media volume when you start speaking before returning to full volume when you stop talking.

The charging case is 10 per cent smaller and now has a USB-C port. The AirPods 4 with ANC can also be charged with an Apple Watch charger or a Qi-certified charger.

The AirPods 4 are priced at $219 and $299 with ANC and go on sale on September 20.

AIRPODS PRO 2

Apple made another announcement about a software upgrade that’s coming for the AirPods Pro 2 that can protect, test and improve your hearing.

Apple says hearing loss affects more than 1.5 billion people and could have other detrimental effects on your health including depression and social isolation.

Apple already has features in place to alert users when they are in noisy environments and to help reduce the ambient noise around them.

But with a future update that is awaiting clinical approval, AirPods Pro 2 users can conduct a clinically validated hearing test in just a few minutes with results presented in their personal profile.

Research shows hearing loss often goes untreated with an Apple hearing study showing 75 per cent of people diagnosed with hearing loss haven’t been given the support they need.

With the update, AirPods Pro 2 can also become a clinical grade hearing aid and be personalised to boosting the specific sounds you need so you hear what’s going on around you and hear the conversations even in a crowded room.

AIRPODS MAX

The AirPods Max has not had any design changes, but it will be available in five new colours – midnight, Starlight, blue, orange and purple.

It will also include a USB-C charging port.

The AirPods Max with USB C will be priced at $899 and go on sale on September 20.

Apple today launched its new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro line-ups which offer larger displays, an all-new Camera Control feature and a foundation for Apple’s very own AI – Apple Intelligence.

And this year’s iPhone 16 models are up to $100 cheaper than the iPhone 15 range.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus along with the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will go on sale on September 20 and start at $1,399 (iPhone 16), $1,599 (iPhone 16 Plus), $1,799 (iPhone 16 Pro) and $2,149 (iPhone 16 Pro Max).

DESIGN AND DISPLAY

While the design has mostly stayed unchanged, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max have a Grade 5 Titanium frame.

They also now have larger displays at 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch respectively with even thinner bezels to give the Super Retina XDR screens an edge-to-edge look

The iPhone 16 Pro Max now includes the largest iPhone display ever.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, made of aluminium with a colour anodised rear panel, have retained their 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display sizes.

The other design change for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus is a re-arrangement of the cameras placed on top of each other.

APPLE INTELLIGENCE

Apple introduced Apple Intelligence at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June and the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max is where the rubber hits the road.

The new A18 chip aboard iPhone 16 and A18 Pro silicon aboard the iPhone 16 Pro models form the cornerstone for Apple Intelligence and power it’s remarkable capabilities.

Apple Intelligence will place powerful tools in users hands that will allow them to be more efficient, creative and productive.

It can be used to summarise and rewrite text, prioritise emails, messages and notifications as well as create images and emojis.

Apple Intelligence will kick off in the US when the new iPhones and iOS 18 is released this month.

For Australian customers, Apple Intelligence will be available from December.

CAMERA CONTROL

One hardware change is the addition of Camera Control – a new tactile switch on the edge of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro lineups that can be used as a shortcut to launch the camera, capture a photo, start a video recording and access other features including zoom, exposure and depth of field.

Camera Control uses a combination of short and long presses and touch gestures to access these controls and features to make capturing images and videos even easier, faster and more intuitive.

Later in the year, Camera Control will also be used for Visual Intelligence so users can learn about objects and places just by snapping an image.

For example, if you walk by a restaurant, you can press and hold the Camera Control button to unlock Visual Intelligence to identify the restaurant and link to its website so you can view the menu or make a reservation.

Visual Intelligence will also make it possible for users to perform a visual Google search to identify objects, animals and products.

CAMERA

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models boast a new 48MP fusion camera system.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus now has a 2x telephoto option while the new12 MP ultra-wide camera with autofocus allows for wider shots and enables macro photography.

Also onboard are a range of new photographic styles which can adjust colour, highlights and shadows in real time.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus can also now shoot video with spatial audio to provide immersive listening through AirPods, Apple’s Vision Pro or a surround sound system.

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max take the already powerful camera and make it even better thanks to a more efficient quad-pixel sensor.

The 5xtelephoto camera is also now available on both iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Last year this feature, made possible by the Tetra Prism lens, was only available with the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max cameras now allow for 4K 120fps video recording in Slo-Mo or Video mode and users can even adjust playback speed after capture in the Photos app.

The Pro models also have four new studio quality mics, with video now able to be captured with spatial audio to create an immersive experience to hear on AirPods and view on Apple Vision Pro.

Apple Intelligence will also come into play with the Pro cameras later this year so users are able to make use of a wide range of photo and editing capabilities as well as performing functions like adjusting the blur in the background of a photo just by asking for it.

PERFORMANCE

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are powered by the A18 chip – that’s a jump of two generations from the previous silicon – so it can do the heavy lifting when it comes to powering graphics and playing games.

Meanwhile the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max include the new A18 Pro chip which delivers a whole new level of compute power to the device to power features like Apple Intelligence and gaming and creating an even higher power efficiency.

COLOURS

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will be available in five colours – ultramarine, teal, pink, white and black.

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be available in four colours – desert titanium, natural titanium, white titanium and black titanium.

PRICING

The new iPhone 16 will be priced at $1,399 (128GB), $1,599 (256GB) and $1,949 (512GB).

The iPhone 16 Plus is priced at $1,599 (128GB), $1,799 (256GB) and $2,149 (512GB).

The iPhone 16 Pro is priced at $1,799 (128GB), $1,999 (256GB) and $2,349 (512GB) and $2,699 (1TB).

The iPhone 16 Pro Max is priced at $2,149 (256GB) and $2,499 (512GB) and $2,849 (1TB).

Apple has unveiled its latest Apple Watch Series 10 with its largest and most advanced wearable display, a thinner design and remarkable new health and wellness features including the ability to detect sleep apnea.

Apple also revealed an updated Apple Watch Ultra 2 which includes an all-new colour and finish.

Apple Watch Series 10 will go on sale on September 20 and start at $649.

It will be available in two new finishes – aluminium (silver, jet black and rose gold) and polished titanium (natural, gold and slate).

The updated Apple Watch Ultra 2 will also go on sale on September 20 and will be priced from $1,399.

APPLE WATCH SERIES 10

The Apple Watch Series 10 now has a larger display (46mm) than the Apple Watch Ultra 2 to offer up to 9 per cent more active screen area than Series 7, Series 8 and Series 9.

Screen sizes for Apple Watch Series 10 have increased from 41mm and 45mm to the new 42mm and 46mm.

It is also the first Apple product to include a new wide-angle OLED display which makes it brighter and easier to read at an angle including when your hand is in your lap, by your side and while you’re exercising.

But not only does it have a larger display it is also nearly 10 per cent thinner than previous models which was achieved by integrating the antenna into the housing of the device itself to join two layers into one.

Apple Watch is powered by the new S10 SiP chip which powers features like double tap, on device Siri, dictation, the ability to automatically detect your workout and detect safety features like fall and crash detection.

Apple Watch Series 10 also includes a depth gauge and temperature sensing when you hit the water along with the Tides app.

The depth gauge can go down as far as six metres beneath the surface which makes it a great companion for snorkelling and shallow diving.

Apple Watch Series 10 will also have faster charging capabilities thanks to a larger and more efficient charging coil.

This means users can get the battery up to 80 per cent charge in around 30 minutes.

Users can now play audio through the Apple Watch Series 10 speakers in the same way they can hear their phone calls.

This means you can hear music, podcasts and audiobooks right from the Apple Watch Series 10 without earphones.

Among the new features with the new watchOS 11 is the ability to detect sleep apnea – a condition undiagnosed by 80 per cent of sufferers.

Apple Watch uses the accelerometer on board to monitor a newly created metric called breathing disturbances.

Every 30 days, Apple Watch will analyse this data and notify you if it shows signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea and provide a detailed report you can show a doctor.

This feature will be available in Australia after regulatory approval.

APPLE WATCH ULTRA 2

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is now available in a new black titanium finish and with new bands.

The new black titanium finished is achieved with a new blasting process and diamond-like carbon physical vapour deposition coating over the Grade 5 titanium.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 is aimed users who want an elevated experience when it comes to fitness and outdoor activity in all terrains and in the water.

Apple says its GPS accuracy is the most accurate in a sportswatch so it can offer more accurate distance, route maps and other metrics.

On the sport and fitness side Apple Watch Ultra 2 is an ideal match for runners, cyclists, swimmers, hikers, divers and golfers.

The latest version of Apple Watch Ultra 2 also supports audio playback of content through the device’s speakers.

The Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 go on sale on Friday September 20.

Apple is renowned for it’s secrecy though in recent years the predictability of their products has become far greater, even the Apple Vision Pro was broadly leaked ahead of it’s announcement last year.  iPhone launches are speculated on more than Interest Rate decisions it seems, and the upcoming iPhone 16 release is no different.

Expected in early September, the iPhone 16 will be Apple’s 2024 model lineup with the brand likely to stick to the model lineup of recent years with an iPhone 16, 16 Plus as well as the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models.

Of course the power and performance of the iPhone won’t be known until the day it’s revealed, however thanks to regular leaks from factories in China we normally learn a fair bit about the physical iPhone ahead of its launch.

Earlier this year I revealed at EFTM some machine cut metal “dummy” models of the iPhone 16 which showed a new side button – likely for the camera shutter.

Today, I can reveal the likley colours the base and plus model iPhone 16 will come in.

The colours are more vibrant than in recent years with a very bold Blue, a washed out Pink and a blueish Green.  What’s notable is the frame of the iPhone also carries that same colour and it’s as vibrant as the back of the phone.

We don’t know if these colours are real until Apple announce them, but we’re pretty confident these will be the iPhone 16 colours.

Expect the Pro models to stay relatively subtle with the Natural, White, Black and perhaps one other colour.

If history repeats, the iPhone 16 will be announced in early September.

Belkin has released a product that works hand in hand with Apple’s new Vision Pro – it’s a specially-designed holder that can help users keep the device’s external battery safely attached to their body.

The Belkin Battery Holder for Apple Vision Pro allows users to snap the battery securely inside and either clip it to their belt or hang it by the included strap across your shoulder.

This way it is a lot safer to move around with the Vision Pro and eliminate the risk of the external battery falling to the ground and potentially taking the headset with it.

In our review of the Apple Vision Pro we noted the external battery was something a user had to keep an eye on.

It is easy to become immersed in what you’re viewing on the Vision Pro and forget the battery is sitting beside you.

Apple has chosen to connect the battery externally to keep the weight of the headset down.

Belkin’s Battery Holder for Vision Pro has a soft microfibre lining to interior a clip so it can attach to your belt or wear it vertically or horizontally across your body with the adjustable strap that’s made of comfortable flexible material.

The Belkin’s Battery Holder for Vision Pro is available now for $89.95 at Apple Stores and apple.com.au.

Did you know you can be tracked across multiple websites, your location data can also be collected without your permission and that web extensions can expose your privacy?

These are just some of the things Apple has pointed out in a new campaign to make people aware of what’s really going on when we browse the web.

Apple, which has always been a strong advocate for privacy, released a new video showing the dangers users face online.

At the same time the company pointed out that its Safari browser on iPhone and Mac offers protection against things like cross site tracking and has a state of the art private browsing mode.

CROSS TRACKING PREVENTION

Most are unaware that users can be tracked across websites to target ads at individuals.

You may have noticed the same ad on different websites across the internet.

Some websites have more than 100 trackers from multiple companies on a single page.

Since 2005, Apple’s Safari browser was the first to start blocking third party cookies.

In 2019, Safari was the first browser to block all third party cookies.

But it goes beyond that.

Data companies are always trying to come up with new ways to track you and Apple has come up with Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) which uses machine learning to find out which domains are used to track you.

It then isolates and clears the tracking data from your device.

Another feature of Safari is being able to hide your IP address from known trackers to prevent your precise location being revealed.

But data companies don’t stop there.

They use a technique known as fingerprinting which can identify things like your system configuration, your fonts, plugins and even your screen resolution.

Looking for this unique combination of your settings is a way the data companies can identify you and track you online.

Safari has a more simplified version of the system configuration which makes it harder to single out individual users.

LOCATION DATA PREVENTION

Location information can reveal a lot about a user.

Information like where you live, where you work, where your kids go to school and where you shop is information that can be gathered when you browse the web and sold to data brokers without your knowledge or consent.

Safari has protections in this area as well starting with search.

Most browsers have built in search which automatically reveals your device’s location within the search engine you are using.

Safari has been built differently and won’t share your location data with the search engine.

But there are times you want to share your location when looking for places nearby and Safari offers an option to allow location tracking for a single day.

PRIVACY AND WEB EXTENSIONS

Many users have web extensions to personalise their browsing experience and to provide more functionality.

But what most people don’t realise is that extensions can provide a gateway for what’s happening on your browser including what’s on your screen and even what you type for passwords and credit card information.

Safari has adopted a system where the user is informed about the information an extension can access before it is enabled.

It’s also possible to restrict an extension’s access for a single day or to specific websites.

PRIVATE BROWSING

Back in 2005, Safari was the first browser to offer a private browsing mode which was able to hide your browsing history from others using the same device.

And while other browsers followed suit, the threats just became more advanced and they haven’t been improved to match these new threats.

The same can’t be said for Safari.

It has evolved to provide continual protection by not saving the web pages you visited or the searches you’ve made and even your autofill information.

These protections are now even more sturdy with Face ID and Touch ID which can lock your browser even when you walk away from your computer.

Private browsing also provides even more protection against aggressive trackers.

Link tracking prevention removes unnecessary trackers. You may notice links with added information to track you. Link tracking removes that additional URL information.

The future has arrived. Apple’s Vision Pro is one of the most impressive pieces of technology we’ve seen in recent years and it paves the way for a whole new computing experience now and well into the future.

Apple has rightly not called the Vision Pro an VR or AR headset – it is all of that and so much more so it deserves not to be pigeon-holed.

We’ve seen many other headsets on the market in the past but none of them have the level of innovation and technology of the Vision Pro.

Customers have to remember this is a stand-alone spatial computer – powered by an M2 chip (8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine) and a new R1 chip which processes inputs from the onboard cameras and sensors – which can operate on its own even without a phone or laptop nearby.

Naturally, Apple has made Vision Pro fit into its excellent ecosystem so Apple customers already inside the walled garden can enjoy all-new experiences.

And like all of Apple’s other products, the quality, design and finish of the Vision Pro will amaze customers along with the countless other touches that are sure to surprise and delight them.

DESIGN

The Vision Pro has a sleek design that offers the typical high quality you would come to expect from Apple.

It is not a one size fits all product with customers who order the device are required to scan their faces to ensure they have the right size strap and light seal included with the unit.

The Vision Pro has numerous cameras and sensors which are used to allow customers to see their surroundings quite clearly but also to pick up their gestures and movements.

There is a little bit of weight (600-650g depending on the light seal and band you’re using) to the Vision Pro but in the week we’ve been using it we were able to fit it comfortably and securely and use it for hours at a time.

The weight is all in the front – you are literally wearing a computer on your face – but the included straps still provide a balanced and comfortable fit.

We used the main Solo Knit wide band that allowed us to keep everything in place comfortably, but Apple also includes a second Dual Loop band that goes over your head for those who need a little bit of help taking the weight.

When you slip on the Vision Pro, there is a small Fit Dial on the right side to offer a tighter fit or to loosen it.

The battery pack is separate and connects to Vision Pro with their proprietary cable that locks into position.

There is a bit of weight to the battery and users need to be careful that it doesn’t fall out of your hand or your pocket and possibly drag the Vision Pro to the ground with it.

We were constantly mindful to have the battery pack in our back pocket or in our lap but also had to remind ourselves to ensure it was close to us when we stood up or moved around the room.

We found the battery lasted about two to two and a half hours on a full charge but we were able to connect it to power on the included USB-C port so we could work, play and enjoy our content for hours at a time.

The light seal attaches magnetically to Vision Pro and blocks out the light while providing a soft cushion for your face.

The Solo Knit band also has cushioning and can stretch to fit around the back of your head.

EYE PIECES

If you wear glasses, you can either obtain a reader or prescription eyepieces (at additional cost) that attach magnetically inside Vision Pro to replicate the level of correction that your glasses would normally offer.

For our review we had two Zeiss eyepieces that matched our reading glasses prescription and that made viewing vision pro razor sharp and crystal clear.

Inside the Vision Pro are two screens and each have resolution that’s greater than the 4K TV you’re watching in your lounge room.

WHAT’S IT FOR

The Vision Pro is not just a toy or a novelty device. This is a product that can be used to work, for productivity, for education, to enjoy apps, play games, watch sport, stream content and much more.

HOW DOES IT WORK

The Vision Pro uses eye tracking for you to navigate the system.

You simply look at an object to highlight it and gently tap your finger and thumb together to create your virtual mouse click.

The real strength of the device is the fact that there are no complicated controllers that you need to hold and learn.

Unlike other virtual reality headsets, Vision Pro takes no time to learn how to use.

It’s easy to arrange and resize windows as well as opening apps and closing them – it’s literally a glance that’s all that’s required.

APPS

There are already more than 2,000 apps designed for Vision Pro ranging from productivity tools, games, utilities and entertainment – and they all utilise the unique environment that Vision Pro creates.

And there are millions of iPhone and iPad apps that can also be enjoyed on Vision Pro including many games said utilities and other popular apps like browsers, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, TikTok, Zoom, Webex, Microsoft Word and much more.

Apps and windows float magically in your physical space – you can even stand up and walk up to it and around it. If you open a window in one part of the house and walk to another room – that other window will still be there when you get back.

Yosemite in Vision Pro

ENVIRONMENTS

The main area that arranges your apps has three options to the left – Apps, People and Environments.

In the environments section users have the choice to transport themselves to various exotic locations including Joshua tree, a Hawaiian volcano, a beautiful white sandy desert, Yosemite national park, Mount Hood and even the moon.

Each of these environments has its own characteristics and audio that truly transport you to that place.

These environments can also be used as a backdrop for your app windows and Facetime calls with the digital crown offering the ability to wind them up or down depending on the level of immersion you want.

WORK AND PRODUCTIVITY

Apple’s Vision Pro is definitely a work and productivity tool that can help you focus on the task at hand and offer even more screen real estate to spread out your work.

There are a lot of native apps including Keynote that allows users to stay productive.

Keynote for Vision Pro is a remarkable tool that not only helps you create your presentation in the same easy and dynamic way that you would on your Mac but also allows you to rehearse your presentation in a remarkable way.

Users can choose to stand on the stage at the Steve Jobs theatre to rehearse their presentation – the same spot where Apple CEO Tim Cook kicks off his keynote presentations.

And you are totally immersed in the environment which includes not only the hundreds of seats in front of you but, if you look behind you, you’ll see your presentation on the big screen as well as your presenter notes in front of you.

Users can also choose to rehearse in a boardroom setting. This is just one example of how Vision Pro can add a whole new dimension to your workflow.

One of our favourite features of Vision Pro is the ability to connect it to our MacBook and use it as our display.

All you need to do is look at your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro and see the Connect option appear.

Rehearse your Keynote presentation in the Steve Jobs Theatre

Once selected the screen on the laptop goes blank and you are suddenly presented with a stunning 5K display that you can resize and reposition right in front of you.

You can still use the keyboard and trackpad and a connected mouse for your input and control but you now have a dazzling display that only you can see.

This is useful to not only stay focused on your project but also to provide added privacy if you are working on a sensitive project.

CONTENT

Viewing content on the Apple Vision Pro is an experience like no other.

Whether it’s streaming a movie, watching the latest episode of your favourite TV show or catching up on a live game the Vision Pro is nothing short of incredible.

Apple TV+ and Disney+ have Vision Pro versions of their apps so viewers can watch the latest movies and TV shows on the equivalent of a huge screen. Interestingly Netflix and YouTube native apps are not yet available on Vision Pro, but you can still watch their content on the included Safari browser.

Vision Pro is like having a portable home theatre.

Now I have gone to great lengths and considerable cost to create a theatre in my house which offers the best possible audio visual experience.

The Vision Pro viewing offers incredible picture and audio quality and is not too far behind our dedicated home theatre in terms of providing an exciting viewing experience.

But the Vision Pro is a solo device whereas my home theatre has several seats for many people to enjoy the movie.

But watching a regular TV screen means having to sit up and look towards the screen.

With Vision Pro the screen moves with you wherever you are looking or moving your head so it would be possible to recline in a comfortable chair or even lay down in bed to watch your content.

But Vision Pro does have the ability for SharePlay so connected Vision Pro users can watch the same movie or TV show on Apple TV at the same time.

Users can choose to be sitting in the front row middle or back of the theatre.

Disney+ also has backdrop options to give users the impression they are at a unique drive-in cinema.

Our favourite Disney+ backdrop was the Star Wars location Tatooine.

IMMERSIVE CONTENT

The Vision Pro can offer users total immersion and Apple TV has just the content to deliver that experience with its Apple Immersive videos.

These are more than just watching a large screen in front of you – these videos take you inside the world you’re watching whether it’s a mountain climber, sitting beside Alicia Keys at a piano, on an African safari, courtside at a basketball match, behind the net at the football or on the field during an American football match.

The potential is huge for major sports to create an all new way to watch the games as if you are sitting courtside or behind the net or on the sideline.

If I could watch live sport like this every week, shut up and take my money right now!

The NBA has developed an app that allows users to watch multiple games at the same time and choose which game they would prefer on the largest central screen.

The PGA Tour has also created a remarkable app that allows you to track tournaments hole by hole and even present 3D augmented reality versions of each hole that you are able to view in real time. This is simply stunning.

3D

Vision Pro also has the potential to start a 3D revival.

Yes, that’s right. You can watch movies in 3D on Apple TV+ and on Disney+ as part of your subscription.

And there are plenty of titles to choose from including the latest Avatar film and 3D versions of some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters including Dune and the latest Star Wars films.

GAMING

Vision Pro is a gamer’s paradise with so many apps built specifically for the device but also countless others which can also be enjoyed in an all-new way.

There’s AirDraw that allows you to paint with your fingers in your own open space.

Super Fruit Ninja, the popular Australian made game, which uses the gesture controls to start slicing away at the virtual fruit appearing in front of you.

If you’re a fan of racing games, there are plenty to choose from and you can even pair an Xbox or PlayStation controller so you can enjoy the massive screen inside Vision Pro and the physical controls in your hands.

AUGMENTED REALITY

There are several apps that can add digital content to your own personal space including JigSpace (another Australian app) which allows you to place 3D objects like jet engines and Formula One cars right in front of you and even take them apart.

Another favourite was Exploring Mars Which placed the Mars Rover right in front of us and allowed us to watch it operate and choose its size before our eyes.

We also loved Sky Guide which allowed us to gaze virtually at the night sky and zoom in on various constellations to explore and learn more about the universe.

And there are many more and there will be many more in the future.

FACETIME

Making a Facetime call with the Vision Pro is one of best things we experienced.

You can connect with other Vision Pro users and talk to each other like you’re in the same room sitting at a table.

It is infinitely better than a video call.

So how can you be seen on Facetime with the Vision Pro – there’s no camera on you and you’re wearing a headset.

You’re seen through your Persona – a 3D rendering of your face and hands that can mimic your actions and expressions and provide a realistic version of you.

We tried a Facetime call with Trevor Long and Kane Vato who had also created Personas for their Vision Pro and it was as close to seeing them in person you can get without actually meeting.

And once you turn on the spatial settings the sound when they are talking is coming from the direction you can see them – just like you would in their presence.

You can set backgrounds for the chat, share your own view and even enjoy SharePlay together so you can watch the same TV show and movie like you’re all in the same room.

This is truly one of the most impressive communications experiences we’ve had since the launch of Facetime.

SPATIAL PHOTOS AND VIDEOS

The Vision Pro is actually a 3D camera you can use it to capture spatial photos and spatial videos that are so lifelike it’s like revisiting a moment in time when you watch it. It’s like you’re there again.

iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max can also capture spatial videos so they can be viewed in 3D on Vision Pro and Canon and BlackMagic Design also have plans to release cameras and lenses to create Spatial content.

This is an all-new way of creating and reliving those precious moments in your life.

TRAVELLING WITH VISION PRO

The Vision Pro is an ideal travel companion that allows you to watch content and use apps like never before.

There is a travel mode onboard Vision Pro to ensure all the windows you open stay with you rather than being left behind because the plane is travelling at high speed.

In travel mode it locates your windows relative to the Vision Pro rather than in your location when using it in your home.

The ability to enjoy your huge personal cinema in comfort and privacy makes Vision Pro a great device to take with you on your travels.

WHAT WE DIDN’T LIKE

The one thing that could be better with Vision Pro is the battery.

It’s tethered to the Vision Pro with a proprietary cable and something you must remember to keep in your pocket or close to you.

If you drop it, it could lead to an accident that could drag the Vision Pro to the floor.

We can understand Apple wanting to keep the battery pack separate to the actual Vision Pro to reduce the weight of the product.

Other brands have located the battery at the back of the headband which balances the weight and keeps everything in one place in a compact package.

Battery life could also be better using it steadily for an hour and a half to two hours could easily bring you below 20 per cent.

Vision Pro does come with a charger and a USB-C cable to allow users to keep it plugged in so they can use it for hours on end.

PRICE

OK, let’s talk about the price.

The Vision Pro starts at $5,999 which means it’s not going to be within the reach of most regular customers.

We can understand brand new technology comes at a high cost.

We’ve seen this in the past and notice prices come down in the years that follow.

But you must remember, the Vision Pro is a standalone spatial computer and a powerful one at that.

It offers incredible power and performance which goes a long way to giving users a memorable experience every time they put it on.

There are many customers who are avid gamers who wouldn’t bet an eyelid paying thousands of dollars to ensure top level performance and low lag when it comes to playing the latest games.

By that logic, Vision Pro should attract the customer who wants not only an excellent gaming device but a device that provides the ultimate productivity tools and a stunning way to view their content.

VERDICT

Apple’s Vision Pro is one of the most advanced products we’ve ever seen. Apple has created an all-new way to work, play, communicate and consume content as only Apple could. The Vision Pro is exciting – but it is the product’s potential that has us even more excited. This is a true game changer.

Apple is rumoured to be working on a special 10th anniversary edition of Apple Watch which will feature a larger 2-inch display. This will make it bigger than the Apple Watch Ultra.

The Apple Watch Series 10 could be called Apple Watch X and feature a thinner design yet with a larger 2-inch display.

The latest Apple Watch is expected to be announced alongside the iPhone 16 in mid-September and will go on sale at the end of September.

CAD renders from 91mobiles were sent to Tech Guide and show a larger 2-inch display.

If this is accurate it will make the new Apple Watch X larger than the Apple Watch Ultra (1.93-inch) and the Apple Watch Series 9 (1.7-inch).

Looking at the renders, Apple Watch X/Apple Watch Series 10 will include its usual features – a square display, the digital crown and a side button in the same positions as seen in the previous models.

It’s also rumoured Apple Watch X will possibly include a new band connection system.

Reports suggest it may be a magnetic band attachment that replaces the current slide in system.

The original Apple Watch was unveiled in September 2014 and went on sale in Australia and around the world in April 2015.

After the announcements of Apple Intelligence and updates to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference we’ve had a lot of questions. Here are all the answers.

Through comments on our posts, emails from readers and our TV and radio interviews we have had plenty of interesting questions.

So we did some digging and found the answers.

Is Apple Intelligence really private?

Yes, it is. Apple has been at the forefront when it comes to customer privacy and Apple Intelligence is no different. Most of the processing for Apple Intelligence happens on the device so your data is protected. But for those times when more complex calculation is required your device will ask, with your permission if it can send the query to ChatGPT. To maintain privacy Apple has developed Private Cloud Compute to certify that any server used meets the privacy requirements and that no data is retained, the data is shared anonymously and that ChatGPT can’t learn from your data or query.

What devices will work with Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence will work with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and any iPad or Mac or MacBook with an M series chip. The entire list is:

– Phone 15 Pro Max – A17 Pro chip

– iPhone 15 Pro A17 Pro chip

– iPad Pro M1 chip and later

– iPad Air M1 chip and later

– MacBook Air M1 chip and later

– MacBook Pro M1 chip and later

– iMac M1 chip and later

– Mac mini M1 chip and later

– Mac Studio M1 Max chip and later

– Mac Pro M2 Ultra chip

What about older iPhones?

Apple Intelligence won’t work because on older iPhones, Macs and iPads without the above chips because they don’t have the power for on-device processing that Apple Intelligence requires.

But these older devices can run ChatGPT. When Siri accesses ChatGPT that will only work on a device that can run Apple Intelligence.

Who owns the rights to images created with Apple Intelligence?

You do. There is no copyright or usage issues because you generated the images so it will be considered your work. If we created an image to illustrate an article with Apple Intelligence and published it on Tech Guide – we own the rights to that image and are free to use it as we please.

How will RCS improve the messaging experience?

RCS (rich communication services) will offer the most benefit when messaging between iPhone and Android users. Now you will be able to see read receipts and when the other person is typing. RCS will also allow Android users to be included in a group text initiated from iMessage.

How does the Passwords app work?

The new Passwords app puts all account passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and two-factor authentication codes that are already stored securely in Keychain in one place. The app also allows users import information from other passwords managers like Dashlane and LastPass. Information can also be exported from the Passwords app to these other password manager apps.  The app will also warn you if a password has appeared in a leak or if it has been used multiple times.

Why would I want to hide an app?

Our phones carry a lot of sensitive information that you don’t want others to see. If you hand off your phone to someone it’s possible that might come across an app or a notification you didn’t want them to see. We were asked in some of our interviews if this was so cheating partners can hide the Tinder or Ashley Madison and other dating apps. Sure, they could do that but what Apple had in mind when it introduced this was so customers could hide things like medical information and related apps and other sensitive health and security information. The hidden apps are kept in a hidden apps folder that will be on everyone’s phone so there is no telling what apps anyone is hiding. When the user unlocks the folder the hidden apps appear.

The iPad never had a calculator till now?

Yes – we think Apple assumed you would use the calculator on the iPhone. Apple has finally added the basic and scientific calculator to the iPad to make it easy to make calculations and unit conversions.

Was there any hardware announced at WWDC 2024?

No – it is the first time since 2021 when no new products or updates have been announced and other years have just had chip announcements. Last year’s WWDC introduced the Vision Pro.

When is the Vision Pro coming to Australia?

Apple’s Vision Pro will go on sale in Australia on July 12 with pre-order starting on June 28 at 10pm.

How much will the Vision Pro and accessories cost in Australia?

Vision Pro is priced from $5,999 (256GB), $6,349 (512GB) and $6,699 (1TB).

ZEISS Optical Inserts for readers will be available for $169 and ZEISS Optical Inserts for Prescription will be available for $249.

The Apple Vision Pro Travel Case will be available for $349 and AppleCare+ for Apple Vision Pro will be $849.

Apple has revealed its own version of AI – Apple Intelligence – which will be available in the coming months as part if iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. But how can you use it?

Here are some examples:

FIND FILES EASIER

Apple Intelligence knows where everything is on our devices and who has shared content with us as well. You can ask to see the files a person sent you or the podcast someone recommended. No more digging around trying to find it.

BETTER ACCESS TO YOUR PHOTOS

Can you remember how hard it is to find a specific set of images in your photo library. Yes, you could sort through the years and months – if you can remember – or search by the people in it. During the Worldwide Developers Conference keynote there were a couple of powerful examples. One identified a woman in a location wearing a pink jacket and they were instantly recognised. There was another example – a set of images of a child with stickers on her face – and that’s exactly what they asked for and exactly what Apple Intelligence found.

SUMMARISE

One of the more popular skills of Apple Intelligence is being too quickly provide summaries whether it’s an article or a document or a transcription. Now you can see a quick summary to see whether it’s worth your time to read a lengthy article or you want the minutes of your meeting rejigged into bullet points. This is a tool that everyone will use.

BETTER PLANNING

Apple Intelligence can help us plan and be organised with our time. It knows how our contacts are, it sees our calendar and it knows about all the flights, tickets and bookings we’ve made. A couple of examples from the WWDC keynote include one person asking what time her mother’s flight lands. Apple Intelligence knew of the booking in her email and checked online with a flight tracker. The other example was juggling a late meeting with their child’s play performance. From the email Apple Intelligence worked out that the meeting would be close to the time he needed to get to his daughter’s play performance and even worked out the fastest way to get their based on traffic for that time of the day.

PRIORTY NOTIFICATIONS

Apple Intelligence can also look at your notifications and, judging by the time and your location, bring the more urgent notifications to the top of your list so you are more aware of it and can take action.

WRITING TOOLS

One of the biggest new features of Apple Intelligence is Writing Tools which can help anywhere on your Apple device wherever you enter text. Users can rewrite, summarise and even change the mood and tone of what they’ve just written to make it suit the situation. It can even check for grammar and spelling errors.

SMART REPLY

Smart Reply makes answering an email even easier. It can look at the questions and information in the message and provide a shortcut so you can make selections before the reply is composed for you.

SORT YOUR EMAIL INBOX

Our email inboxes are getting harder to manage but Apple Intelligence can help you get a handle on it. It will look through your inbox and see dates, invitations and bookings and prioritise the message that need your attention and then you need to be reminded about.

CREATE IMAGES AND GENMOJIS

Generative AI is also part of Apple Intelligence and it gives you the ability to create original images and your own emojis which are called Genmojis. You can start with a basic sketch and with Image Wand it can turn a crude drawing into an amazing illustration so you can add it to your projects and presentations.

CREATE MEMORIES

We have lots of videos and images in our Photo gallery and Apple Intelligence can take the images taken from event or trip and turn them into a memory. It will take the video clips and images and put them together and even set them to an appropriate song from your Apple Music library.

WHICH DEVICES WILL WORK WITH APPLE INTELLIGENCE

Here is the list:

– Phone 15 Pro Max A17 Pro

– iPhone 15 Pro A17 Pro

– iPad Pro M1 and later

– iPad Air M1 and later

– MacBook Air M1 and later

– MacBook Pro M1 and later

– iMac M1 and later

– Mac mini M1 and later

– Mac Studio M1 Max and later

– Mac Pro M2 Ultra

Apple has announced software updates for iPhone, iPad, Vision Pro, Mac and Apple Watch which include new features to customise your home screen, mirror your iPhone on your Mac, lock individual apps and send text messages via satellite.

These features were announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, Apple Watch 11 and VisionOS 2.

Here are the new features:

iOS 18

Customisation: Users will have new options to customise the home screen and lock screen including arranging apps and widgets in any open space on the home screen to make it easier to see your wallpaper. It will also be possible to change the colour of your app icons and widgets.

Control Centre: Control Centre will have a new look to offer easier access and offer a new level of customization. You can add controls from third party apps and do things like unlock a vehicle or capture content from the Control Centre.

Lock and hide apps: A new feature allows users to lock or hide individual apps for additional privacy. And when an app is locked or hidden, content from within that app is hidden from search, notifications and other places across the system.

Messages: There are new text effects for your conversations with the ability to amplify letters, words and phrases or emojis with animated appearances. Text can also now be formatted with bold, underline and italics. The number of choices for Tapbacks has also been extended to include any emoji or sticker. It will also be possible to schedule a message to send later.

Messages via satellite: If cellular and Wi-Fi connections are not available, iOS 18 will use the same technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities and allow users to send messages via satellite from the messages app.

RCS support: Apple also mentioned RCS (Rich Communication Services) will also be supported to offer improved media sharing and more reliable group messaging between iPhone and Android users.

Mail: There will be new ways to manage your inbox and stay up to date with the updated Mail app which can categorise and organised incoming email so users can see the most important messages. You can sort your inbox into different types of messages including marketing emails, promotions, social notifications and news.

Photos: The Photos app has received its biggest ever update and redesign and now offers a simplified single view display as well as the familiar grid. A new carousel view can show you highlights that update each day and include favourite people places pets and more.

Passwords app: iOS 18 will include a dedicated Passwords app to make it easy to access passwords, pass keys, Wi-Fi passwords and verification codes and builds on the foundation of keychain which was introduced more than a quarter of a century ago.

iPADOS 18

iPadOS 18 contains many of the features available in iOS 18 along with a few others that can only be used on the iPad

Calculator: Apple has finally added the basic and scientific calculator to the iPad to make it easy to make calculations and unit conversions.

Maths Notes: Maths Notes utilises the calculator in a different way. Instead of typing in the letters on the calculator, users can type or write out maths problems and see them instantly solved in their own handwriting. This also includes a new graphing feature so you can write or type an equation and insert a graph with a single tap.

Better handwriting: iPadOS 18 can tidy up your handwriting to make it easier to read while maintaining the same look and style of your personal handwriting with the new Smart Script feature.

New tab bar: Apple has redesigned the tab bar to float above the iPad apps content so users can stay focused on what they’re doing or watching. Users can reorder or add other tabs from the sidebar for your own personal customization.

Safari: The Safari browser now has a new feature called Highlights that utilises machine learning to bring key information about a web page to the surface. With this tool, a user could read a summary of a long article or quickly find the location of a hotel or restaurant from their website.

Screen share: SharePlay has seen an interesting update which gives users the ability to tap and draw on their screen to point out what needs to be done and provide instructions. This feature also makes it possible to remotely control a device with permission.

MACOS SEQUOIA

iPhone mirroring: Continuity now offers iPhone mirroring to access and use your iPhone on your Mac as if you’re holding it in your hand. Users will see their iPhone on their Mac screen and will be able to browse and launch apps and drag and drop content seamlessly between devices.

Safari: Safari gets an update and gives users an easy way to discover information on particular websites including directions, summaries and external links. There is also a redesigned Reader so you can read content without distractions as well as accessing a table of contents for longer articles and summaries. And if there’s a video on the page, a viewer can help bring it forward while still offering access to playback controls.

Window tiling: You can organise the desktop even better with macOS Sequoia able to suggest a new way to arrange open windows into tiled position side by side or placed in corners to make it easier to view multiple apps at the same time.

Improved video conferencing: if you are working with apps like FaceTime and Zoom for your video calls it would now be easier to present with a new presenter preview so you can see what you’re about to share before you share it. It’s also easier to apply backgrounds with existing wallpapers or your own photos. These can be applied in FaceTime and on third party apps including Webex.

WATCHOS 11

Vitals app: Apple Watch will capture important metrics during your sleep including heart rate, respiratory rate, risk temperature, sleep duration and blood oxygen. The Vitals app will take these metrics and view them in context to offer a real daily health status to ensure they are within the typical range.

Training Load: Training Load will allow users to understand the impact of their workouts on their body over the last week compared to the last month. This feature will use a new algorithm to check if you’re on track or overdoing it with your workouts and make informed decisions if you’re preparing for an event.

Pregnancy support: Expectant mothers can log any changes in their physical or mental health in the health app on the iPhone or iPad. The cycle tracking app on Apple Watch will also track their progress and give them the ability to log symptoms they experienced during pregnancy. They will be asked to review things like high heart rate notifications since heart rates tend to increase during pregnancy.

Smart Stack: there will be new widgets for the Smart Stack including Shazam, Photos, Distance and more with the Smart Stack also now able to suggest widgets based on time, date, location and daily routines. There will also be new interactive widgets to allow users two interact with the app right from their wrist.

Translate app: The Translate app is now available for Apple Watch with support for 20 languages which can be accessed directly from their wrist.

VISIONOS 2

Spatial memories: Users can revisit memories and create spatial images directly from their library in the Photos app using machine learning that would transform a 2D image into a spatial photo for Vision Pro. Users with an iPhone 15 Pro can create spatial videos so they can be enjoyed and brought to life on the Vision Pro. Later this year Canon will release a brand new spatial lens for its popular EOS R7 digital camera to capture spatial video.

New hand gestures: visionOS2 makes navigating and accessing features on the Vision Pro even easier. New gestures will bring users back to home view in the control centre even faster as well as being able to access important information like the current time and battery levels.

Multiview: The Apple TV app brings Multiview to Vision Pro to allow fans to watch up to five simultaneous streams to keep track of all their favourite sports and teams.
