With the popularity of the Samsung Frame TV – a unit that takes the “black box” on the wall and makes it artwork when you’re not watching TV, you can see the small leap that was made at Samsung to come up with the concept of the Samsung Music Frame.

This is a speaker, but at no point would anyone pick it was a speaker.

Out of the box and once setup (which is a really fast and easy process), this looks like a large photo frame.

You can hang it on the wall, all the hardware required for that comes with it, but that would also require you to run the 2m power cord through the wall and plenty wouldn’t bother with that.  However, if you have a TV that’s wall hung, it’s worth considering doing the same here, just for the look.

It’s possible to get two of these and hang them each side of your TV and get stereo sound with epic quality over and above your TV – without having to install a soundbar – something plenty might choose for the pure aesthetic of it.

Samsung Music Frame has an Optical input if you’re hard wiring a TV, or it will operate on WiFi and offer Chromecast, Apple Airplay and WiFi streaming via Samsung Q Symphony which means for a recent Samsung TV you should be able to choose the Music Frame for sound output.

The output is certainly room-filling – a booming sound, with two clear bass speakers at the back this doesn’t lack.

I’d say there’s a very finite lack of clarity from the sound, but I think that comes from the form factor, with no direct speaker grill – instead you’re firing sound into and around the plastic cover that is your chosen photo or artwork.

That’s not at all to say the sound is bad, in fact it’s fantastic – I’ve loved having music filling the room these last week or so.

At $499, it’s reduced from $699 and that’s a far better price point.

If you want to throw your own photo into the frame, you can insert n 8x10inch print but only the 8×8 centre of the image will show.

Or, you can create your own custom front cover.  I did this at a site called Marpple and the cost came to almost $150 AUD with the design and shipping.

Really cool product.  I think no doubt an Audiophile would be better placed with a solid soundbar or speaker to choose for this placement, but for a style and tech-minimalist approach this is a really great idea and great sounding speaker.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 continues to lead the way as the premium foldable but this time out it has not only got its unique form-factor, but it has been enhanced with Galaxy AI as well.

As we saw in January with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series – the addition of Galaxy AI made an excellent smartphone even better.

The same can now be said for the Galaxy Z Fold6.

The hardware has matured to become even thinner and lighter while increasing its durability.

And the novelty of being able to open the device and reveal a larger screen has certainly not worn off.

It still delights anyone we showed it to who had never seen a folding smartphone until we put the Galaxy Z Fold6 in their hands.

There was genuine fascination.

Samsung isn’t the only manufacturer with a folding phone – but it was the first.

This device could very well attract more people into the foldable category and make them an even more mainstream than ever before.

The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy with 12GB RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage.

This year, there were some minor improvements in design but under the hood is where most of the improvement lies thanks mainly to Galaxy AI.

The Z Fold6 has basically the same Galaxy AI features we saw with the S24 Series but what you have now is some impressive hardware to support and enhance it.

On the design side, Z Fold6 has had some noticeable changes mainly the squarer corners along with the slightly larger front screen.

We think the square are shape makes the device look more like a smartphone in the folded position.

It also provides the illusion that the screen has grown larger than it actually has.

The device is also slightly thinner and lighter and felt less bulky than previous models.

In fact, when we compared the thickness of the Z Fold6 to the Galaxy S24 ultra in a case and it was roughly the same thickness.

The front display is now 6.3 inch – that’s 1mm larger diagonally but a few millimetres wider.

The situation is slightly better when using the front screen which in the past has been a bit of a struggle especially trying to type a message.

The Z Fold6 is only a marginal improvement.

We’ve been saying for years the front screen of the Samsung Fold devices needs to be significantly larger which would offer a two-fold benefit of having an easier time typing messages as well as providing room to insert and store an S Pen.

The S Pen is not included – it is a different S Pen than the used with the S24 Ultra – and it only works on the inside screen.

We found ourselves having to open the device to even do basic things like typing messages, browsing the web and viewing and creating content for social media.

Naturally it’s fine to answer calls and take photos but anything more involved and you’ll need to open the device and access that large 7.6-inch AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex Display.

And what a fine display it is. Knowing you have this larger screen in your pocket when you need it is a great feeling.

We took advantage of that fact several times including watching our beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs playing their match while we were still in Paris seated on a bench on the shores of the Seine river.

You’re also able to run three different apps at the same time to take your multitasking on the move to the next level.

It is this versatility that is the main draw card for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6.

Another draw card is Galaxy AI which serves to enhance the experience even further.

We enjoyed being able to edit and adjust our images and Circle to Search but being able to record an interview and have it transcribed in minutes was also remarkable.

We did two interviews which were longer than 45 minutes each and the Z Fold6 only took a few minutes to transcribe the recording while also distinguishing between different speakers.

The quality of that transcription could have been better (although we were talking to two people who had strong accents) but we were still able to piece it together.

And if we couldn’t understand it, we could simply tap on a word and be taken instantly to that section of the audio recording to hear it back for ourselves.

Galaxy AI could also provide a summary and even translate it into a different language.

This was an impressive feature, and we know it is only going to improve.

Another AI feature built for this form factor is Interpreter.

Users can take advantage of both the main screen and the cover screen for natural real time interaction.

Right now there are 16 languages available.

You can speak to someone – they will see what you’re saying in their language on the screen facing them and you will then read their reply in English or your own language on the inside screen facing you.

The S24 Ultra and the Z Fold6 front screen

We tested this while watching a couple of foreign language films and it did a great job apart from when the person talks quickly – at times it struggled to keep up. But again, this is only going to improve.

Samsung has made it clear the support for the device will go well into the future and will include seven years of OS and security updates.

We’re assuming these updates will include improvements to Galaxy AI as far as the hardware will support it.

The S24 Ultra and the Z Fold6 inside screen

On the camera side, the Z Fold6 has basically the same triple camera system as the previous model with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, 50-megapixel wide angle and 10-megapixel telephoto lens and they did a remarkable job capturing stills in all kinds of lighting conditions and videos that offer the quality you’d expect from a flagship device like this one.

Naturally Photo Assist on the largest screen helps to create impressive content while Portrait Studio offers portrait styles including drawings and comic book renditions of the image.

The instant slo-mo is an excellent feature so you can slow down a section of your video.

If you’re a gamer, the Galaxy Z Fold6 will let you come out to play and enjoy a high quality gaming experience.

It now has a 1.6x larger vapour chamber so you can play longer without compromising performance while enjoying amazing graphics supported by Ray Tracing which, on the 7.6-inch screen, looks remarkable.

The Galaxy Z Fold6 has a 4,400mAh battery onboard which lasted us almost two days in the two weeks we’ve been using it as our daily driver – we did everything on it including watching a lot of content and the large inside screen as well as multitasking.

Watching South Sydney play on the Galaxy Z Fold6 on the banks of the Seine River

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 didn’t skip a beat.

It is available from July 31 in Silver Shadow, Pink and Navy and is priced at $2,749 (12GB+ 256 GB), $2,949 (12GB + 512GB) and $3,299 (12GB + 1TB).

VERDICT

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 is the pinnacle of foldable smartphones and, with its design enhancements, versatility and remarkable Galaxy AI, will tempt many customers to reach for their first folding smartphone.

The kitchen is an ideal example of the challenges Australians are facing today – they have less time to prepare meals and are frustrated with the time it takes to cook multiple dishes at the same time.

The new Samsung range includes the Oven Flex Door which allows users to cook two meals separately at the same time and also check on their progress remotely through a built in camera.

The latest Samsung Family Hub refrigerators Can even detect and catalogue of all the food placed inside using an AI camera

“Samsung has been investing in AI for more than a decade, and it is something we see come to life in our connected appliances,” says Jeremy Senior, Vice President, Consumer Electronics, Samsung Australia.

“It is no secret that many Australians today are time poor, which is reflected in these findings and their focus on convenience over cooking at home.

“Our built-in cooking range is the latest addition in Samsung’s AI connected-home ecosystem, and through the power of Samsung’s innovative technology and AI, we are excited to provide home chefs of all levels with innovative technology that combats the pain points faced in the kitchen.

“The robust new smart cooking line-up from Samsung includes ovens, cooktops, rangehoods and dishwashers, all with innovative new tech solutions, inspired by the rapidly growing adoption of AI in the home.”

The other barrier for cooking apart from time pressures of everyday life is also a lack of inspiration and ideas when planning meals according to 43 per cent of respondents.

The other roadblock, says 42 per cent, is not having the right ingredients.

More than half (53 per cent) of Australians agree they could benefit from an AI-powered device in their home and that it would be of most use to them in the kitchen.

The new Samsung built-in cooking range works hand in hand with the Samsung Food App which can recommend recipes for busy households and meet all dietary preferences.

Another reason behind the interest in bringing AI into practise it to also reduce food waste according to 46 per cent of those surveyed.

Australians see the introduction of AI as a positive change and 60 per cent are willing to invest in AI kitchen appliances in the next few years.

The whole range is optimised with Samsung SmartThings app which lets you monitor and control smart home products including the new Samsung built-in cooking range.

Key technology included in the Samsung Built in Cooking Range includes:

– Wi-Fi Connected: Allowing Australians to remotely monitor and control their oven, cooktop, and range hood from their smartphone – whether it be to pre-heat on the way home, through to auto-cook settings from the comfort of their couch.

– AI Pro Cooking: With a built-in AI camera, end-to-end professional quality cooking will be made easy, fun, and shareable. Without needing to open the oven door, cooking can be optimised through recipe selection, and post-cook highlight videos created to share with friends or across social media.

– Dual Cook Flex: Some oven models will include two compartments that can be set to two different temperatures, as well as when multi-cooking a flexible door means one zone can be checked without interrupting the other – providing both time and energy efficiencies (when only using the top half).

– Samsung Food: A personalised, AI-powered food and recipe app, to support Australians plan their weekly meals. Samsung Food offers more than 160,000 recipes, acting as a personal assistant that helps Australians discover new dishes, create tailored meal plans and order ingredients online. The service also helps users control their cooking appliances and access guided cooking experiences.

The new Samsung built-in cooking range is available now to buy from samsung.com/AU and from retail partners including Harvey Norman and The Good Guys.

The Samsung Galaxy A series smartphones are among the best value devices on the market right now and that has been demonstrated dramatically with its latest release – the Galaxy A55 5G.

As time goes on, mid-tier phones are only going to improve thanks to the trickle down of technology from flagship devices that are now included in these more affordable products.

If you take a closer look, the features aboard the A55 were considered flagship not so long ago.

The Samsung Galaxy A55 ticks all the boxes for even the fussiest user.

These include a sleek design, a generous and high quality 6.6-inch screen, an impressive camera system and a battery that will last almost two days.

What more could you ask for for a phone that costs less than $700.

Now to be clear, you are not getting all the features of the Galaxy S series like better camera quality and zoom, Galaxy AI, the S Pen or wireless charging.

But that’s not to say it doesn’t still have an impressive list of features – with some appearing for the very first time on the Galaxy A series including improved low light photography and higher security features.

The device has a sleek and premium design with an aluminium frame with a brushed metal finish, flat edges and a glossy rear panel.

The device has a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and compatible with HDR10+.

The screen is an excellent size and has impressively thin bezels so you’re getting more screen instead of a larger device.

On the camera side, you have a 50-megapixel wide main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide and a 5-megapixel macro camera.

But if you play a big selfie game, the Samsung Galaxy A55 will really deliver thanks to a 32-megapixel front facing camera.

And while it’s not Galaxy S24 quality, it’s certainly not far behind and I defy anyone who can tell the difference between the shots taken on either device.

One excellent new edition to the A55 is the inclusion of advanced AI image signal processing which improves the performance of the camera in low light.

This is a first for Galaxy A series device and is something we only usually see on the flagship Galaxy S smartphones.

It even has a Night Portrait mode and 12-bit HDR video to add some real punch to your content.

Users will also find the cameras are supported with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and video digital image stabilisation (VDIS) so whether you are shooting video or taking a photo it’s gonna look sharp and clear.

Another feature was seeing for the very first time on the Samsung A series is Samsung Knox Vault which offers security for both hardware and software.

It basically encrypts all your information and secures your private data including pin codes, passwords and patterns.

Picture taken with the Samsung Galaxy A55

Bottom line, unless you know the password for the phone there is no way anyone can access the data on your device which offers peace of mind if it’s misplaced or stolen.

But the security extends even further with a new security measure called Auto Blocker which can stop app installations from unauthorised sources and offer security checks in the event of potentially installing malware on the device. That’s an excellent level of security for device at this level.

OK, let’s talk about what you don’t get with the Galaxy A55.

Picture taken with the Samsung Galaxy A55

The first thing, there is no wireless charging, so you always need a cable to charge the phone rather than resting it on a charging pad.

This might be a nuisance for those who drive cars with wireless charging pads included – unfortunately you’ll have to stick to a charging cable.

But it still does have NFC which is the feature that allows users to make tap and go payments to access credit cards stored in either the Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet

Galaxy AI, which was introduced with the S24 series is also not a feature on the A55.

Picture taken with the Samsung Galaxy A55

While there are some elements of AI to help you take better photos and make the device run smoothly, customers who want the full blown Galaxy AI experience will have to move up to the Galaxy S24 range of smartphones.

Another strong feature of the Galaxy A55 is the 5000mAh battery which easily lasted a day and took us well into the second.

This is helped by the onboard efficiency which can turn off apps that you haven’t used for a while to help your battery lost even further.

The new Galaxy A55 5G is available in two colours – Awesome Navy and Awesome Lilac and it priced at $699. It goes on sale on March 25.

VERDICT

The Samsung Galaxy A55 5G smartphone proves you don’t have to spend big money to buy a sleek feature-packed phone. The A55 ticks all the boxes – great design, awesome display, excellent camera and a long-lasting battery. At this price what more can you want.

Samsung has announced Galaxy AI that has made the recently released Galaxy S24 smartphone a huge hit will become available to other Galaxy devices via a new One UI 6.1 update.

The update will be available for the Galaxy S23 series, the S23 FE, the Galaxy Z Fold5, Z Flip5 and Tab S9 series.

It will roll out in Australia from April and will elevate the user mobile AI experience that will adopt a hybrid approach and combine on-device and cloud-based AI.

“Our goal with Galaxy AI is not only to pioneer a new era of mobile AI, but also to empower users by making AI more accessible,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics.

“This is only the beginning of Galaxy AI, as we plan to bring the experience to over 100 million Galaxy users within 2024 and continue to innovate ways to harness the unlimited possibilities of mobile AI.”

The AI features the new update will offer will include Live Translate, Chat Assist, Circle to Search, Note Assist and Browsing Assist.

The Galaxy AI tools will also allow users to edit your images with Generative Edit, Edit Suggestions and Instant Slo Mo.

LIVE TRANSLATE
One of the barriers we must overcome is the language barrier especially when travelling in foreign countries.

Galaxy AI has now made that even easier with Live Translate – a two-way real time voice and text translation of phone calls inside the native phone app.

We were able to make a restaurant booking while speaking to a Korean woman who was hearing the real time translations from English to Korean before we receive the Korean to English translations in reply.

CHAT ASSIST

When writing messages and using other compatible apps, chat assist can help users to tailor the message for the person who will receive it.

Chat assist can suggest other tones for your message to ensure it is appropriate communication whether it’s a message to a co-worker, or your boss or a caption for your social media post.

This feature presents your message in several other options to make it more formal, more polite, more respectful, playful and funny.

NOTE ASSIST

Taking notes and recording interviews are common tasks with the Galaxy Ultra devices which includes the S Pen to allow users to write down notes and organise them into preset templates and formats, create covers to make them easier to identify.

It can also be used to summarise your notes.

CIRCLE TO SEARCH

Search has also gone to a new level with Galaxy AI thanks to the Circle to Search feature which allows users to circle and highlight anything on your screen to see search results.

During our hands on demo, we were able to circle the sneakers being worn by a person nearby through our camera and within seconds it not only identified the sneaker but also presented online stores where we could purchase it for ourselves.

Circle to Search also works with landmarks and objects you see in the background of social media posts.

And the search takes place without you having to leave the app you’re using.

EDIT SUGGESTION

When you take a photo or look at any other photo in your gallery, you can initiate Edit Suggestion.

This AI feature looks at the photograph and suggests ways to improve it.

For example, we had an image with a shadow across the subject’s face and Galaxy AI suggested this edit and then completed the task within seconds.

In another photograph, there was an image which showed the reflection of a woman in a window. Galaxy AI was able to remove that reflection in an instant.

GENERATIVE AI

Generative AI really opens things up for users to remove objects from the background and move and enlarge the subject of the photo to another position wall filling in the background with impressive accuracy using generative AI.

INSTANT SLOW-MO

When editing videos it’s possible to create a section in slow motion with the Galaxy AI able to insert extra frames to slow things down to focus on a particular moment.

These AI powered camera features will also work with select third party social media apps like Instagram.

The release of the Samsung Galaxy S24 range of smartphones will be remembered as the first mobile devices to enter the AI era and improve your experience across the board.

There will be other smartphones from rival brands that inject AI in a similar way, but Samsung got here first.

While there are some cosmetic design changes with the S24 line-up of devices and a performance improvement – it is the software and Galaxy AI that make this one of the biggest year-on-year smartphone improvements that we’ve ever seen.

Flagship devices only ever offer incremental changes and are not aimed at the customers who purchased last year’s model but the customer with a four year old phone who can truly appreciate the accumulated updates over the intervening years.

But Samsung’s new Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra will not only have recent customers thinking about trading their device for the new one but it will even attract some iPhone users to make the switch.

This review will be focusing on the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Add to all this a stunning screen, a brilliant camera system and excellent performance and you’ve got an irresistible product.

DESIGN

There have been some design tweaks to the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

The Galaxy S24 (6.2-inch display) and S24+ (6.7-inch) now have flatter edges and a matte finish rear panel that makes it less slippery.

The biggest change has been reserved for the Galaxy S24 Ultra which now sports a titanium frame to give a more premium look and feel.

Another change to the S24 Ultra that we like is the new flat display. The S23’s display had a slightly curved edge which was OK until the S Pen slipped over the side when you were writing or drawing.

The flat screen now means users can easily see the edge without going over.

All the new Galaxy S24 smartphones also have slightly thinner bezels so the displays look like they go truly edge to edge.

GALAXY AI

The standout new feature is without a doubt the Galaxy AI which includes so many new features including Live Translate, Circle to Search, Chat Assist, Note Assist, Transcript Assist, Browsing Assist and Interpreter.

Galaxy AI also comes in to play in your photography with the ability to enhance and edit pictures and videos like never before.

LIVE TRANSLATE

Live Translate works incredibly well in real time within the native phone app to translate your conversation between 13 languages.

The supported languages are English, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai and Vietnamese.

So if you’re in a foreign country and need to book a restaurant, call a taxi or reserve a hire car, the S24 has got you covered.

You see real time translations and transcriptions from each side of the chat.

We tried it talking to a Korean woman to book a restaurant and it worked perfectly. A

And it’s all happening on the device as well.

INTERPRETER

Sometimes the person you’re speaking to in a foreign language is right in front of you and you can share the S24’s screen and flip the text so each person can read their part of the translation.

And this requires no connection to the internet or data – this is all happening in real time on the S24.

CHAT ASSIST

One of the hardest things to convey or understand in a message is tone.

The S24 can help by looking at your message and seeing the person you’re sending it to and suggest different styles and tones – like more formal or more professional.

When you tap the icon filled with the stars, Galaxy AI will work on some variations of your message while still conveying the same meaning and intention.

This could be a real life saver – especially if you regular message clients, customers, your boss, your wife and various other important people who you don’t want to accidentally offend.

It is your new messaging safety net.

NOTE ASSIST

Customers who opt for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will no doubt be brandishing the S Pen and Note Assist can help you knock things into shape, organise and receive summaries.

TRANSCRIPT ASSIST

The best way to capture what’s said in a meeting is to record it – but the big hassle is to transcribe it into a document that can easily be searched and referenced.

Transcript Assist can do just that and even distinguish between different speakers.

BROWSING ASSIST

One incentive to use Samsung Internet as your go to browser is Browsing Assist.

This feature can quicky summarise longer web articles into something that’s easier to digest.

CIRCLE TO SEARCH

This would have to be one of the most impressive features.

Everyone we showed Circle to Search to was gobsmacked and immediately saw the possibilities.

And this works not only with any new photo but also on social media or the internet.

If you see something you like, press and hold the home button and circle the object and instantly you’ll see the results of a Google search.

If you spot a nice handbag or a pair of shoes you can grab a snap and find out the brand the price.

It’s ideal for those who are too shy to walk up and ask someone about their bag or their shoes or any other article of clothing.

And it works in the same way of you spot something you like on social media.

It’s a game changer to search for what we see.

CAMERA

The Samsung S24 Ultra has an outstanding quad camera system that consists of a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 200-megapixel wide-angle camera with 2x optical and Quality zoom, a 50-megapixel camera with 5x optical zoom and 10x Quality zoom and a 10-megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom. Optical Quality zoom is enabled by the Adaptive Pixel Sensor.

Image captured with the Galaxy S24 Ultra

What drives the quality of the cameras is the new ProVisual Engine that does the heavy lifting when it comes to capturing and editing your images and videos.

AI Zoom is also a welcome addition which uses deep learning to ensure your zoomed image looks it best all the way up to 100x.

And it has an excellent focus lock so even at 100x the camera is locked on to your target to make it easier.

Image captured with the Galaxy S24 Ultra

There are also the amazing Nightography capabilities which boosts your images and videos with more light when there is very little light to begin but also optimises your pictures and videos captured in situations like concerts or when viewing fireworks.

EDIT SUGGESTION

This is one of the most powerful features of Galaxy AI which can look at your image and suggest improvements like removing shadows or reflections and blurring the background of your selfie.

Forget spending time manually enhancing your images with the edit tools – AI does it for you in seconds and more often than not the difference between the original and the mastered show is incredible.

Erasing the pole that spoiled the image

GENERATIVE EDIT

This comes in handy when you need to move or erase an object in your image.

You select the object you want to move, resize or remove and the Galaxy AI does the rest including building in the part of the image that was covered by the object or person you’ve erased or moved. It is truly remarkable.
INSTANT SLO-MO

With Galaxy AI it’s possible to create a section in slow motion when editing your videos by insert extra frames to slow things down to focus on a particular moment.

These AI powered camera features will also work with select third party social media apps like Instagram.

The zoom capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra are amazing

PERFORMANCE

The Samsung Galaxy S24 series is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform for Galaxy for added power and efficiency.

The Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 ultra all have up to 120Hz adaptive refresh rates.

COLOURS

The Galaxy S24 Ultra colours include Titanium Grey, Titanium Black, Titanium Violet and

Titanium Yellow.

There are also some online exclusive colours including Titanium Blue, Titanium Green and Titanium Orange.

On Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 the available colours will include Onyx Black, Marble Grey, Cobalt Violet and Amber Yellow.

The online exclusive colours are Sapphire Blue, Jade Green and Sandstone Orange and Titanium Orange.

PRICING

– Samsung Galaxy S24 – $1,399 (256GB), $1,599 (512GB).

– Samsung Galaxy S24+ – $1,699 (256GB), $1,899 (512GB).

– Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra – $2,199 (256GB), $2,399 (512GB), $2,799 (1TB).

VERDICT

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is probably the best smartphone you can buy right now with a sleek look and feel, excellent performance, a stunning screen, incredible camera system and the brilliant Galaxy AI. This package is just too good to resist.

Samsung has shared its plans and insights for AI at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and unveiled AI-enabled visual display products, digital appliances and the upgraded Ballie rolling AI robot.

But Samsung was very quick to point out – they’re not coming late to the party with AI – they’ve already invested more than a decade of time and energy into the technology.

Samsung says AI will enable connected technologies to improve people’s daily lives but will stay in the background.

“With the emergence of artificial intelligence, smarter, better experiences will redefine how we live,” Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Samsung’s Device eXperience (DX) Division said.

“Samsung’s broad portfolio of powerful devices, along with the pursuit of open collaboration, will help bring AI and hyper-connectivity to all.”

Samsung re-introduced Ballie a rolling robot that was first introduced in 2020.

Today Ballie has evolved into an AI companion that can interact with other smart devices and offer customised tasks and services.

Ballie is also equipped with a short throw and long throw projector to display content as well.

Samsung’s new 2024 Neo QLED TVs are powered by a new NQ8 AI Gen 3 processor to make upscaling to 8K quality even better and faster.

But AI isn’t just restricted to TVs. Samsung is deploying AI into its appliances as well starting with the Bespoke 4-Foor Flex refrigerator with AI Family Hub.

This refrigerator has a 32-inch screen but also includes the new AI Vision Inside which uses internal cameras to recognise up to 33 different food items as you’re putting them in or taking them out of the fridge.

And with this information, the refrigerator can suggest recipes based on the ingredients inside.

The Samsung Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is an all in one washer and dryer featuring the AI Hub – a 7-inch display that is the control centre for managing your laundry.

It can also remember users habits via machine learning and suggest cycles that will save you time, water and energy.

Samsung’s new bespoke Jet Bot Combo also employs AI to offer an effective cleaning experience thanks to AI object recognition which can distinguish even more objects as well as detecting stains and spaces.

This also means the robot vacuum can recognise the type of floor it encounters and the length of carpet and adjust its settings to match.

SmartThings is at the centre of Samsung’s connected home vision.

Samsung has partnered with Tesla

Spatial AI will now help connected devices recognise the living space and routines of the user to come up with a more personalised home management experience.

SmartThings uses LIDAR on connected devices like robot vacuum cleaners and create digital floor plans to easily check the status and location of all your devices.

In March, SmartThings will roll out the upgraded 3D map view for a more detailed experience on Samsung smartphones and TV’s.

And if you want to add more family members and friends to your SmartThings ecosystem, they simply have to scan a QR code so that they can have their own routines recognised.

On the sustainability side, Samsung is also ramping up its efforts and partnering with other companies to help customers live more responsibly.

A new feature called SmartThings AI energy mode utilises AI to help track your energy usage and create ways to help you save and optimise your power.

Part of the SmartThings energy strategy is partnering with Tesla to connect products like Powerwall home batteries and electric vehicles along with solar inverters and wall connector EV charging solutions.

Samsung has also partnered with Hyundai

This collaboration will be able to help customers in numerous ways and help drive more responsible energy usage and extend the usage time of any backup energy stored in the Tesla powerwalls.

Samsung is also bringing the home and the car closer together with a few new home-to-car capabilities.

Samsung has also partnered with Hyundai Motor group with both parties having access to home to car and car to home services thanks to the smart things connectivity.

“Using Hyundai Motor Group’s software-defined vehicle, SmartThings will now work with Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles through the app,” Haeyoung Kwon, Head of Infotainment Development Center and SDV Execution Sub-Division at Hyundai Motor Group

 said.

“All of us at Hyundai Motor Group appreciate our partnership with Samsung, and we’re excited about the new features we’re bringing to your vehicles through smarter connectivity.”

Using SmartThings, users will be able to use their voice to remotely perform functions in their car including heating it up in advance or opening and closing windows.

The SmartThings connectivity can also work the other way with users able to manage and control home functions from their car.

Samsung has deepened its longstanding partnership with Harman to transform the way users experience driving.

“Samsung’s leadership in consumer technology — together with HARMAN’s automotive expertise — has opened the door to game-changing experiences like HARMAN Ready Care, Ready Vision and Ready Display,” Michelle Gattuso, Vice President of Product Management at HARMAN said.

“But now, the work we do with Samsung is getting even more integrated. Samsung and HARMAN are working in lockstep to bring even more impactful experiences to the entire in-cabin ecosystem.”

Samsung has confirmed it will be holding a launch event on Jan 17 (early Jan 18 in Australia) for its new Galaxy S24 line-up of smartphones which promise revolutionary Galaxy AI.

Samsung says the latest Galaxy innovations are designed to transform the way we live, connect and create.

The Unpacked event will be held in San Jose, right in competitor Apple’s backyard, kicking off on January 17 at 10am (January 18 at 5am AEDT).

We can expect to see a new Samsung Galaxy S24 with a slightly larger 6.2-inch screen, the S24+ with a larger 6.7-inch display and the S24 Ultra with the same 6.8-inch as the previous model.

Image: SmartPrix / OnLeaks

SmartPrix partnered with OnLeaks to produce renders of the devices based on leaked information about the design and specs.

Rumours have suggested the S24 Ultra will have a titanium frame with the S24 and S24+ made from aluminium and all three models sporting slightly flatter edges.

The flagship S24 Ultra will reportedly offer a new suite of colours including Titanium Black, Titanium Grey, Titanium Violet and Titanium Yellow.

The new Samsung Galaxy S24 line-up will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen processor with suggestions it will run Exynos chips in some regions.

Image: SmartPrix / OnLeaks

On the camera side, we can expect the S24 Ultra to have a 12-megapixel ultrawide, 200-megapixel wide, 10-megapixel and 50-megapixel zoom lenses along with a 23-megapixel front-facing camera.

The S24 and S24+ will likely have a 50-megapixel main camera which can shoot 8K video as well as 30x zoom and telephoto lenses with 2x and 3x capabilities.

One of the biggest new features will be the onboard Galaxy AI which will offer capabilities like real-time translation with support for up to 12 languages, generative AI that will take photo and video editing to all-new levels and even more in-depth web searches.

Image: SmartPrix / OnLeaks

The new Samsung Galaxy S24 smartphones may also offer emergency satellite connectivity – like Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite – if customers get into trouble outside cellular coverage areas.

The new Samsung S24 range of smartphones will be available to pre-order from January 18 and go on sale in early February.

Stay tuned to Tech Guide for all the details about the Unpacked Samsung Galaxy S24 launch.

If it’s been a while since you’ve updated your home AV set-up – the good news is Samsung has a few options to help you find right solution to suit your needs and the viewing conditions.

The improvements in picture and sound quality even in the last few years has been remarkable.

Samsung, the leading TV global manufacturer for the past 17 years,[1] has a wide range of options and screen sizes to make the home entertainment experience better than ever before.

And not all viewing conditions are the same – there are brighter rooms, darker rooms and rooms for fit an even larger TV.

Samsung’s range of TV’s include OLED, its flagship Neo QLED models, QLED, Crystal UHD and not to mention the Premiere Projector for the ultimate cinema experience. There’s also The Freestyle Portable Projector for high-res viewing on the move[2].

And, on the audio side, Samsung’s latest soundbars can extend the experience and totally immerse you even further in the movie or TV show you’re watching.

One trend in Australia is our move towards larger TVs. As a matter of fact, 85-inch is the fastest growing TV size in Australia.[3] And once you go big, there is very little buyer’s remorse.

Samsung’s stats[4] show 95 per cent of TV customers surveyed with screens 75-inch and above are either happy with their purchase or wish they’d gone even bigger. Nearly half (43 per cent) of all customers who purchased a TV in 2022 were sorry they didn’t go even bigger.[5]

Samsung’s OLED TV

SAMSUNG OLED

Samsung has extended its line-up of OLED TVs with 55, 65 and 77-inch models to offer more choices to customers who watch TVs in darker rooms, and rooms where they can completely control the lighting conditions.

Samsung’s OLED have more than 8 million self-illuminating pixels which means there’s no need for a backlight. This means the pixel is either on or off, which results in stunning black levels, clean whites, and vibrant Pantone-certified colours. Pantone certification means the TV can accurately display 2,030 Pantone colours and 110 shades of skin tones.

But Samsung’s OLED TV also incorporates Quantum Dot technology which adds brightness and even more accuracy[6].

The other Quantum Dot benefit is the contrast and HDR (high dynamic range). OLED+ gets even more out of the picture – brighter brights and darker darks.

At its heart is the Neural Quantum Processor 4K which can optimise the picture – brightness, contrast, upscaling and enhancing objects – it all happens in real time.

Samsung’s OLED TVs also have eight speakers built around the edges of the TV to provide OTS (object tracking sound) which allows viewers to track an object as it moves across the screen.

Samsung’s NEO QLED TV

SAMSUNG NEO QLED

Samsung’s jewel in the crown is the Neo QLED TV range, available in sizes all the way up to 85-inch.

The QN900C has a stunning Infinity display with the incredible picture going edge to edge.

One of the strengths of Samsung’s Neo QLED is colour and brightness,  meaning the TVs can easily handle bright, open-plan rooms with very little reflection. The backlight is made of Samsung’s Mini LED technology. The LEDs are 1/40th the size of a regular LED and the increased and precise lighting control creates even more detail and less blooming.

A bright object can be right next to inky black levels thanks to the remarkable Mini LED technology[7].

Also under the hood is the Neural Quantum Processor which optimises the experience in real time.

Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs are available in 4K and 8K and have AI onboard to upscale your content to the respective resolution.

The means YouTube, movies, games and your TV shows will look better than ever.

On the audio side, the Neo QLED TVs also have OTS (object tracking sound) and Dolby Atmos so you’ll be hearing sound coming from every direction including above you.

The TV has a One Connect box that can attach on the back of the stand, position on an entertainment unit, or inside the entertainment unit with just one cable running to the TV.

All your sources can then be plugged into the One Connect box.

All Samsung TV are powered by the Tizen operating system with easy access to free-to-air channels alongside popular streaming apps. Another excellent feature is Samsung TV – hundreds of free channels that are broadcast via your broadband connection. These include movie, sports and entertainment channels.

SmartThings[8] is also a feature of Samsung TVs so you can connect, monitor and control the smart devices and appliances in your home from one easy-to-navigate dashboard.

Samsung’s Premiere short throw projector

SAMSUNG PREMIERE

If you’re after a true cinematic experience and want a bigger picture, the Samsung Premiere Projector could be the answer.

Premiere is a short-throw 4K projector which can produce an image up to 130-inches on your wall, or on to a fixed projection screen.

And being a projector, it comes to life in dark conditions.

The Premiere can rest on a table or entertainment unit and can be positioned just 11.3cm from the wall.

The latest model has Triple Laser technology to produce impressive brightness and precise colour accuracy.

And there are inputs to connect all your sources and built-in speakers with 40W of 4.2ch audio.

It also has the same Tizen OS and access to free to air channels, Samsung TV and streaming apps as well as the SmartThings dashboard.

Samsung’s Freestyle projector

SAMSUNG FREESTYLE

This is the appropriately named product because there is no limit to where you can take it and your viewing.

This smart little projector can produce up to 100-inches of full, high definition image and, unlike traditional and more complicated projectors, the Freestyle is a snap to set up.

You can aim it at the wall, at the ceiling or at a sheet hanging off the clothesline. The Freestyle can even run off a portable battery base[9] so you can take the viewing party anywhere.

It has auto-focus but also straightens out skewed images so you’re ready to enjoy your movie, TV episode or sporting event in a matter of seconds[10].

Also onboard the Samsung Freestyle is a built-in 360-degree speaker[11].

And you’ll find everything you’ll find on a regular Samsung TV thanks to the Tizen OS which offers Samsung TV free internet channels and all your favourite streaming apps.

And when you’re done, you can pack it away in a hardshell carry until the next movie night.

Samsung’s Q Series Soundbar

SAMSUNG SOUNDBARS

Good sound is half of the experience when it comes to immersing yourself in a movie, or wanting to feel like you’re actually at the game.

Samsung’s range of soundbars can help elevate your viewing and enjoyment.

The Q-Series Soundbars have set a new standard in audio quality with 11.1.4ch surround sound through front, side, rear and upfiring speakers that can also offer true Dolby Atmos and DTS:X[12].

A unique Samsung feature with the soundbar connected to a Samsung QLED TV is Q Symphony, which allows viewers to have sound coming from the TV and the soundbar at the same time so you are truly surrounded by sound that takes the quality to another level.

And if you’re after style without compromising on big sound, then the S-Series Soundbars are the answer.

With a sleek design, the S-Series still produce 3.1.2ch sound and Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for a room-filling sound.

Samsung has announced the release of the Galaxy SmartTag 2 – a small device that allows users to track valuables and other important items through their Samsung smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2 is similar to Apple’s AirTag, but it only works with Samsung smartphones.

The Galaxy SmartTag2 has a ring-shaped design so they can easily add to keyrings and attached to bags and luggage.

It also has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance which means you can track your valuables while travelling anywhere.

And for pet owners this means Galaxy SmartTag 2 is durable enough to handle the everyday wear and tear if they are attached to your dog or cat’s colour.

“We are constantly looking at ways to make people’s lives more convenient through Samsung Galaxy’s industry-leading innovations,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings, Device Platform Centre at Samsung Electronics.

“With the Galaxy SmartTag2, we set out to make sure Samsung Galaxy users can find their belongings in an easy and intuitive way.

“With an enhanced finding experience and a longer battery life, Galaxy SmartTag2 will provide users with greater peace of mind for longer and in more situations.”

If the item attached to Galaxy SmartTag 2 is misplaced or stolen, the location is determined and pinpointed if it pings any other nearby Samsung smartphones.

So think of the Galaxy SmartTag 2 as a mobile phone on a network and the towers of that network are any Samsung smartphones that happened to be passing by.

Apple’s AirTags work in a similar way with Apple products in the vicinity helping to narrow down the location.

The Lost Mode for Galaxy SmartTag 2 will make lost items easier to find.

Lost Mode allows users to add their contact information to Galaxy SmartTag 2 and then if anyone discovers your item they can use their phone to scan the tag and read the owner’s message and find out their contact information.

For example, if a Galaxy SmartTag 2 is attached to a dog’s collar – anyone who finds your dog can immediately see the owner’s information and phone number.

Lost Mode works with any NFC-compatible smartphone.

Galaxy SmartTag 2 also has a compass view feature which will literally point you in the direction of your lost item and even tell you the distance in relation to the user.

This mode works on any ultra-wide band (UWB) supported Galaxy smartphone including the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The SmartThings Find app has been upgraded to work with newly registered Galaxy smart tags and even installs a shortcut to the app on your Galaxy smartphone.

The app can also provide a full screen map view to make the Galaxy SmartTag 2 even easier to find.

Power saving mode can ensure the Galaxy SmartTag 2’s battery will run for up to 700 days.

Normal mode also offers up to 500 days of tracking.

The Galaxy SmartTag 2 uses a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection with a maximum range of 120m and takes advantage of ultra-wide band (UWB) capabilities that can enable Augmented Reality to visually guide users to their item using their Samsung Galaxy smartphone camera.

Samsung Galaxy users will also be able to see an alert if an unknown Galaxy SmartTag 2 is detected nearby for an extended period.

Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag2 will go on sale on October 12 in black or white and will be priced at $55 each or $169 for a four pack.

Tablets have become a lot more powerful in recent years – so powerful they can take the place of your laptop or step in as an alternative.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is one of those tablets.

It is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 3.36Ghz octa-core processor and 12GB RAM which makes it quite a capable device.

On the design side, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is remarkable with a thickness of just 5.5mm.

This makes it thin enough to slide under a door.

And it weighs in at 732g.

It is made of aluminium with flat edges and a matte finish on the back so you can get a better grip when you’re holding it.

Another key feature is the durability. The tablet has an IP68 dust and water rating so it’s as tough as your smartphone. That will give potential users peace of mind.

It is available in graphite or beige – that’s it. We would have liked to see some other strong colours.

We had the beige model for our review. Not a colour we would have chosen but it grew on us.

The first thing you notice about the tablet is the stunning 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display which makes whatever you’re watching or playing or whatever app you’re using just pop.

Samsung has always excelled with their displays and the 14.6-inch screen on the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is gorgeous.

It also has 120Hz adaptive refresh rate so the colours and brightness that already knocks your socks off is also backed by a smoothness that tops everything off when watching movies, playing games and scrolling around.

Throw in HDR10+ and the already excellent viewing experience gets even better when watching 4K content on streaming services.

Having a screen of this size can supersize things like apps and games you would normally play in portrait mode on your smartphone.

On the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra it’s on a much grander scale.

The screen real estate also lends itself to easy multitasking so you can spread out your work. It’s possible to run three apps at the same time.

The tablet also comes with the S Pen so you’re able to write and draw on the screen or jot down some notes.

The responsiveness is excellent and not far off using a real pencil on paper.

It can attach magnetically on the back of the Tab S9 Ultra when you’re not using it, but it will come loose if you put the tablet in a backpack.

We would have preferred a top magnet to hold the S Pen on the edge but that would have it made it just like the iPad Pro and the second generation Apple Pencil.

Users can purchase a keyboard case and cover ($359) to really transform the tablet to a laptop. We didn’t receive this accessory to use with the tablet for our review.

And not only does the Tab S9 Ultra look amazing it also sounds amazing as well with Dolby Atmos and the AKG Harman tuned quad speakers. Turn it up to full volume at night and you’ll wake people up in your house.

There are two rear cameras – a 13-megapixel wide and 8-megapixel ultrawide and two on the front – both 12-megapixel – one primary and one ultrawide so you can easily snap a quality selfie.

Being a larger tablet means Samsung can also fit in a larger battery – and that’s exactly what it did.

The battery aboard the 14.6-inch Galaxy Tab S9 is a colossal 11,200mAh which lasted us more than two days with steady use.

The smaller tablets in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 range have 10,090mAh (12.4-inch) and 8,400mAh (11-inch) and the battery is consistently relevant with the screen size it is powering.

In other words, the larger screens have larger batteries and deliver similar battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra tablet isn’t cheap – it starts at $1,999 for the wi-fi model with 256GB storage and 12GB RAM.

Move up to 512GB storage and 12GB RAM and the price goes up to $2,199.

And this moves up to $2,449 when you opt for the 5G model.

The smaller tablets start at $1,299 (11-inch Galaxy Tab S9) and $1,699 (12.4-inch Galaxy Tab S9+).

VERDICT

Samsung has produced a winner with the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra. The huge 14.6-inch device is both a huge and fun playground and a productive workspace with the power and features to deliver a memorable experience.

Samsung Australia has scored a big win with its impressive Galaxy Tab tablets receiving the Canstar Blue award for the Most Satisfied Customers and beating Apple in this category for the first time.

Earlier this year Samsung also won the same award for its smartphones.

Canstar Blue, the trusted consumer comparison site, surveyed more than 3,000 Australians who had purchased a tablet in the last two years.

They were asked to offer a rating on their experience in the following areas: value for money, user friendliness, battery and charging performance, design, durability, performance and overall satisfaction.

Samsung received a five-star rating in five categories: value for money, user friendliness, battery and charging performance, durability and overall satisfaction.

Apple received a five-star rating in three categories: user friendliness, design and performance.

“Samsung’s Galaxy Tab series of Android tablets offers something for everyone, from lightweight and lower-priced options to premium devices with professional specs and features that function as an all-round laptop replacement,” said Tara Donnelly, Canstar Blue’s Utilities Editor.

“That broad appeal is one of the reasons Australian consumers placed Samsung firmly ahead of other big-name competitors to win Canstar Blue’s Most Satisfied Customers – Tablets award in 2023.

“Real buyers gave Samsung five stars for overall satisfaction with their tablet purchase and, at a time when budget pressures are a major concern, also gave the brand five stars for value for money, battery life and durability.

“For consumers who want to pay a reasonable price for a good-quality device that’s built to last, those results are a great recommendation!”

The latest Galaxy Tab S tablets have also just been released with prices starting from $1,299.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A Series range in price from $379 to $599.

“At Samsung, the consumer experience is at the heart of everything that we do, and we make a conscious effort to ensure we are providing customers with the ultimate user experience for each and every one of our products,” said Garry McGregor, Vice President of Mobile Experience at Samsung Electronics Australia.

“We strive for perfection through relentless innovation to ensure we stay at the forefront of amazing customer experiences, and to be awarded Canstar Blue’s Most Satisfied Customers for Tablets after receiving the same award for Smartphones earlier this year is a testament to that effort.

“We’re proud to be able to offer our customers devices that enhance their everyday life while continuing to push technological and creative boundaries.”
